On Christmas night 1776 Washington attempted crossing the Delaware with his army to escape the British encirclement, however it ended in failure when they came across a group of heavily armed royal navy rowboats monitoring the river. After a brief skirmish Washington and the entire continental army was captured and the revolution was dead before it could really start.
Despite fears of British reprisal the terms presented to the continental congress were surprisingly lenient and addressed most American concerns: the colonies were reorganised into kingdoms equal to England and Scotland with their own parliaments and a contribution to an "imperial defence fund" in place of taxation, as well as this the colonies were permitted to settle the Indian reserve at the expense of Britain's former native allies. Quebec was greatly reduced in territory and rights for French Catholics restricted at the request of the New Englanders.
With the loyalty of the kingdoms now assured, the British empire is free to expand across the entire continent.
