Description
Created for the monthly contest, The WOW Factor.I admit, this isn't my style....at all. I'm planning to use it as a birthday card for a much younger cousin that will most likely adore it though.
I wanted to try a fractal collage and thought this contest was a good opportunity, because the description said this: "I want everyone to pull out ALL the stops. I want to see masking, reverse masking, double masking, texturing and more texturing, extreme gradient control, lighting, layering, and transforms the likes of which I've never seen before!"
In total I used 58 layers, 23 of them are masks. I used reverse masking, double (and triple in some places) masking, with a lot of use of the alpha channel, lots of work on gradients, lots and lots of textures on each little individual bit of the image, lighting, mapping, everything. Tha hardest parts were getting the rainbow to overlap the top part of the clouds while having it lie under the lower part of the main cloud layer (I'm proud of that bit, it was really hard
), and the tree. There are 5 different layers making up the tree structure (tweaked formula on each one) and each one had to have the texture applied to it separately. So a ton of work went into this, and I learned a lot from making it. Because I used so many advanced techniques I think it would make a good demo for people who are really new to the program and want to see some of that stuff in action. The best way to learn it is by example, in my opinion.

This is simply beautiful! It's not my kinda picture either, but it just shows the achievments that can be reached with UF. My 4 year old daughter says it's her favorite picture and wants me to make my pictures more like this one

I was in Hamilton for a System Of a Down concert a few years back, it's a pretty cool place! I don't mind North Bay scenery wise, but the job market SUCKS.

Masking is pretty easy, seems scary until you really work with it and then it's not so bad. The gradient editor and alpha channel take more getting used to but are pretty straight forward... I don't know why there isn't a tutorial just for the gradient editor, there really should be.... hmm... 
The job market is pretty bad here too, more jobs in TO of course. We don't have snow here, rain and lots of mud! Very strange winter this year.

This is one of the coolest things i've seen done with UF. VERY VERY nice. It really did make me say wow. I hope it wins...at least in the top 3 if not first! because it definitely fits the "WOW" criteria ^^ If i remember to vote, this will definitely be one

I did learn a lot from it, especially very fine gradient and alpha channel control and a lot about the different layer merge modes and settings. It isn't my style, I actually don't like the style of this much at all other than the sky (minus rainbow and cheesey sun).
Time to get back to more artistic things with the tools I picked up from working on that.

Very clever, a masterful demonstration, and an heroic effort, but has it lost the essence of fracticality (whatever that may be) in the pursuit of representation? Your own comment suggests you find some such unease with it. Anyway, it certainly does what was asked for in this competition, par excellence. Has my vote so far. Since you invite critique - perhaps the stars are a bit too simple, not quite up to the very high quality of the rest? How about some fluffy clouds? (I will send you my cloud parameters in case you don't have any.)

Thank you. I agree, it lost all of its identity as a fractal work in the process and it really isn't my style at all, but it serves its purpose as a contest entry and a kid's birthday card. 
I don't like the stars much myself, the OCA is a bit ugly on its own in my opinion. I could possibly spend a bit more time on them and add another layer to make them fit in with the rest of the image better but they were just a bit of ornamentation I added because the kid getting the card likes purple, and stars.
For the fluffy clouds, if you look very carefully the background of the image is very close to the cloud parameters you sent me, just with different colours and much subtler. I didn't want to make them any more obvious because I thought it wouldn't work with the more structured clouds that are there. So it's very very faint and almost completely obliterated by the other layers but it still makes a huge difference in my opinion. Thanks for the parameters though, that was really great of you.

Makes a nice cheery card for a child...would even make a good Get Well card. Can see where it would take so many layers since you had to wipe out 9/10 of the formula to isolate your shapes! Looks like a lot of hard work...good show!
