I looked at stamps, and holy hell, there are more "ANIME IS ART DEAL WITH IT" and "ANIME SUCKS" stamps than I ever... forget over 9000, it's over 90,000! So I guess this is just another wave in the ocean, but whatever, has to be said.There are some people on deviantart, some people I know personally, and just so many people all over, who argue (among other things) that you shouldn't watch, or draw, or enjoy anime or characters/character types therein because they are Japanese and you are not.
Yeah.
I'm sure some of you are sitting there thinking I'm making this up, but trust me, if I was going to lie, I'd come up with something less laughable than that.
Do you have to be French to enjoy fries? Italian to enjoy pasta? Swedish to sleep on that Ikea bed? German to drive that car? Canadian to play basketball? Chinese to type at your computer? That thing wasn't made on this continent.
I can't believe I even have to type this, but here it is: Welcome to globalization. Nationality has no bearing on the legitimacy of your enjoying a TV show, character, archetype, or art style. You don't have to be Japanese to watch an anime, read manga, do your comics from right to left, or draw a catgirl. Why would you even think that?

By the logic that Western people can't watch Anime, that means Asian people can't watch Western cartoons like Looney Tunes.

Thank you for this <3. I have a ton of story ideas and one of them is a manga, but I've never really been able to nurture it like I do my novels because I'm not Japanese, but calling it a regular "comic" or "graphic novel" sounds....wrong.
And I've been told before by some people that it wouldn't be a manga, because I'm not Japanese nor do I live in Japan (though I would like to).

You know what's sad? It's overtaking us. I know someone who tried to introduce a friend (whose first language is English who only read manga to superhero comics by giving him a reprint of Amazing Fantasy 15. His friend gave it back the next day because he found the left-to-right comics format too difficult to read.

If you plan on selling comics in the US, then it would be a good idea to make sure they read from left to right because you'll get a bigger base of fans that way, since not everyone knows how to read the other way. I do agree with you though, anime is not just for Japanese.
