i implemented some of the original design of the medic suit in sc2 (the avatar that you can see when you select a medic unit) plus some resemlance of the normal cmc 405 light combat suit (very similar to the old marine suits back in sc1)
while trying to make it somewhat authentic. thanks for your compliment!

Argh!!! This is so amazing that it does nothing but intimidate me! I can always look back and think: "Why was I ever worried", when observing how I progressed but it does little to quell the self-defeating (and untruthful) feeling that I will never be this good.

Wish I could be more positive but you are so damn good that my inspiration comes twinged with intimidation.

thank you! and also.. applogies :/
believe me, whenever i look at my idols' works i feel the same way... i often feel like "i should quit, coz i'll never be even remotely as damn good as him or her" and the best is if you can find Yourself in art, doing what you love in your level and helping others. everyone can improve beyond their bounds, it just takes different amount of time and practice for each individual

Heh, what do you know, a friend of mine figured it out just from watching me draw.

I did not think in layers, just large chunks of volume and silhouettes. Sure I start out with simple shapes but all I did was see the silhouette of the whole in the process instead of stacking from the center out. This hamfisted my workflow and thus my creative process by creating an inversion of can't see the forest for the trees. Sorta like subdividing a cube a couple of times, whether you need it or not, before you actually begin to model with it or drawing the outline of a tree, branches and all, then trying to fit the trunk and remaining branches in. Creating nothing but busy work in the process while distracting one from the creative process. It was my own unintuitive work flow that distracted me and took away my confidence when designing. Now that I can recognise my shortcoming I hope to begin improving again as a lack of creativity is a curse I would wish on few.

P.S. It would also explain why designing body armour was always easier as I would draw the person then stack outwards, I am so daft for not noticing the obvious.

as for an answer to your hidden comment (that i can remember a bit, sorry for the late responding!)
yeah, i totally understand you, trust me!
i'm always keep looking at my idol's work and i can see the difference between their stuff and mine, but i cannot reach that level no matter how many times i try
so i guess this kind of struggle is very similar to everyone.

in regard of what your friend said... i kidna agree on that but i'd also add that without the lack of examining and studying stuff in the world, forms, colors, shapes, styles... it's really hard to express what is inside you.
what i mean by that is when you are really creative inside, but your hands just do not follow your mind, you know (kinda same that you had described earlier).
so for that blockade to lift off your mind, you really need to study a lot and improve in capturing the things that you see with your eyes. it's never enough to just stare at something and observe it by your eyes!
you need to try to copy it, capturing it's essence will help you memorise that. i remember when i 1st copied a tiger's face and painted a huge poster by copying a picture of the tiger and i still remember how the stripes go around the tiger's eyes and on it's face.
so try to copy some designs you love, some concepts about monsters, mechanics, what have you in your inspiration folder. always try to focus the most on what you love, and try to do some linearts first, try to copy a few things and they will really enroot inside your mind after a time. it's really hard to "build" a house when there is nothing to build from, no material, no fundaments. your mind needs to have a library, every great artist gets his inspiration out of the things he sees and studies they make and if you have already copied a few things you will begin to understand why they look so good, understand their essence and will be able to create your own stuff with a higher quality.

another thing maybe is 1st try to brake things down a bit and try to learn things one by one. for example if you learn to draw, do not kill your time on coloring and shading until you cannot draw a n acceptable lineart, maybe it1s not that good of an example, but you know what i mean i hope

Thank-you very much for all of your insight! I tend to become passionate when talking about my creative shortcomings and was worried that I annoyed you. Relieved to see that that is not the case. Once again, thank you very much for your insight and advice!

Never worry about that brother!
I struggle with the same things! Just I had some duties and email conversation in parallel to DA and also the traffic was a bit high here at the time so I decided "next day" I'm gonna deal with thanking my watchers and answer to comments and then moved it to "next week" and a month passed, but I was too lazy so it took so lomg, thank you for your patience!

I have learnt a lot from others in the art community so I tend to help others too if I can. I'm not doing a good job at it :/ but at least I'm trying...

Except for the face (nose and mouth look a little off) a very impressive model! I think you handled the difficult proportions of Blizzard's marines very well improving it compared to your concept

Can't wait for the textured version

Well the face was a temporary model on this render. I already have the face modelled (you can either check it out by the link in the description or in a future update, when i texture everything)

tsabszy In reply to altermind [2014-10-05 15:50:44 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I was trying to design it so a real woman body fits in it actually. Same way like the original marine suit for man, where the hands of the operator are inside the arms of the suit. Still the proportions might not be perdect
