And now, a massive tank engine.

This is the G&SWR 540 designed by Robert Whitelegg and built-in 1922 at the North British Locomotive Works, Whitelegg had experience with designing large tank engines for express work on the LT&SR, some of the G&SWR's traffic was quite similar to that around London and as such the new engines were designed and built.

The Six were large engines with huge boilers and very distinct looking with their huge frame and distinctive boiler, with Whiteleggs Circlet smokebox handrail, smokebox mounted Whistle and polished metal boiler cladding which looked blue. They were massive and magnificent locos and were quickly set to work on passenger traffic to the Clyde Coast.

They were expensive to built so their arrival was used for publicity with the class labeled as the Baltic Tanks, whilst engine man in ussual Scotish style called them the Big Pugs, this expensiveness was carried into their repair costs.

Withdrawns were quick once 2 and 4P's started arriving in the 30s' all were gone after their boilers were up for renewal.

The would go pretty quickly, with class Premier 540 by then 15400 in January 1935 and the last being 15404 in September of 1936.
