I decided to touch up my Teen pony speed paints and hopefully turn them into new buttons for BronyCon! Working on the rest.Related content

Up close the improvement is clear, but at a distance or smaller preview the one on the left just reads better. There's your catch-22, and you'll be fighting with it for the rest of your art career.
Another conundrum that wreaks havoc on your ability to sleep is detail vs simplicity. You have a lot of grainy details all over your painting, it doesn't give the eye a lot of proper places to rest, and it makes the composition overall very busy. The picture on the left has more places for the eyes to rest and places for the eyes to go, and for that reason I also think the image on the left is a little better. Just my two cents, even though you didn't ask for critique...

I've done some realistic buttons before and surprisingly people tends to look at buttons real close. With everyone else doing cartoony mimilistic buttons, my buttons stands out a bit better due to my realism style. Β I wanted to also bring the eye more to the face, so I added more grainy detail on her neck so her face is more visible.
I do have to catch myself with the details still, but overall most of the buttons I'm working on is benefiting from the extra detail. Twilight was already quite detailed before so the before/after wasn't quite drastic.

I get ya, man, people notice these sort of things. But from a design standpoint, I think that your paintings would benefit more from form-modeling, rendering/lighting, and edge shape/hardness management. "Detail" is a very debatable thing, adding detail, which usually results in granular noise, doesn't specifically make something more "realistic," and the trade off isn't nearly as effective as good lighting and shape. That's my professional opinion, but if you find that this is selling more than your simple paintings, no sense in stopping. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a huge improvement, but be really careful with how you use "detail" in your paintings, you may do more harm than good overall. Hopefully the button prints at a high resolution.
