Description
(these sketches aren't for anything in particular. Just some ideas I had while looking at creepy Japanese urban legends and folklore)Oni- the idea I had for Oni enemies were to be undead WW2 soldiers wearing the traditional red Oni masks and wielding a variety of firearms and melee weapons. These would be the most common enemies of the game and could also be wearing garbs of civilians, cultists and/or prisoners.
The Oni would represent the most evil ambitions of mankind, as well as war crimes and atrocities and other horrific acts, which goes with the legend of the Oni, in that any person that commits such a large number of sins in their lifetime will become an Oni when they die and go to hell, or even become an Oni on Earth, where they will terrorise mankind.
Jinmenkin- a corrupted form of a somewhat harmless Japanese urban legend, the dog-faced creatures would have been twisted into subservient slaves to the Oni and other evil entities, with the mask-like faces they have representing the guilt and despair they have for being forced to partake in evil acts. They will mainly circle around the player until they find to opportunity to strike, much like the Groaner enemies from Silent Hill, though they will be making sounds of tired old men in eternal pain.
Nukekubi- flying heads that acts much like the Lost Souls from the DOOM series, flying and screaming as they suicidal charge at the player, exploding on impact. Based on the urban legend of the same name, about evil women that can remove their own heads that fly around at night to drink the blood of mortals, the heads of the Nukekubi all wear the Hannya mask, traditional theatre masks that represent a jealous female or female demon, and since these would be undead beings, it's possible this form of jealousy led to their deaths. I'm debating whether or not the source of these enemies come from multiple beings, or one being (possibly a boss).
Kappa- representing the more perverted nature of humans, these slow moving aquatic enemies lumber out of water and crawl in an eerie motion towards their prey. You may think this makes them easy targets, but the kappa are near indestructible, with their only weakness being the water-logged skulls. Destroying the top of the skull that holds their life water is the only way of effectively killing them. Out of all the creatures I sketched, the kappa are the least human in appearance, being a mix of a terrapin, a toad and a rotting corpse, with a hollowed out skull filled with water and five spine-like protrusions on their back that form a shell.
