--------------------------------------
As you can see, after several months of making promises, I finally finished my vectoring tutorial
This tutorial was strongly influenced by Unmei’s Tracing Tutorial on Ferricorp.Com. I learned how to vector from him. It’s a good, beginner-friendly tutorial and so far I was linking it to all people who asked me for vectoring guidelines but one day I decided to make my own version [longer, a little more detailed, with a few of pieces of advice and my own thoughts].
If there are any parts you find unclear, please don’t hesitate to note me. I’ll try to explain it for you once again in different words, if possible. Also, I’ll be more than happy to see your own vectors, made with the help of this tutorial. ^.^
I’d like to thank =Realm-Of-The-Shadows for checking my spelling and grammar
It’s also the right place to say ‘thank you’ to all my watchers who offered their help as beta-testers
Disclaimer:
Vectoring screenshots and scans [in other words: tracing them directly line by line] is against dA policy. As far as I know, if someone reports your vector trace while providing original screenshot/scan you used, it will be removed from your gallery. That’s why I encourage you to treat screenshot/scan vectors only as a form of practice before you move on to more complicated things. You can vector your own drawings and sketches, other people’s linearts and/or drawings [after asking them for permission, of course], realistic photos [photo traces are allowed, as realistic trace demands more time, skills and creativity than anime ones] – or images combined from several screenshots [as I sometimes do].
In other words - please keep in mind that when you submit screenshot/scan vector trace to your gallery, you do that at your own risk. According to dA policy, it doesn't belong here: it should stay on your hard disk. My intention isn't to encourage you to trace and I take no responsibility if you decide to submit a direct vector trace to dA.

First of all, I'm really sorry for such a late reply I have a huge mess in my message box and didn't notice your comment earlier T_T So I don't know if my answer will be of any help now...
Anyways, that outline disappears if you simply select a different layer

I've used your tutorial, and it was astoundingly useful! I've always heard of vectors, but they've always been very difficult for me. I've only recently learned how to use the pen tool, yet I managed to get the basics of vestor tracing.
I cheated in some parts because I don't want to spend a ton of time on it, but for the parts I did, it looks really amazing. And the parts that I didn't, I still used the basics of what you did to pull it off.
Thank you so much for all of this! I'm also looking at the other three parts, but I thought I'd just use one massive comment. ;D
I'll post my finished product when I'm done so you can see how awesome I've gotten in comparison to before, all because of your help. ^w^

Since I did use your tutorials to help create my first vector/vexel (according to the definition you've given, a vexel, but I don't mind it too much), I think it's only fair that I leave a comment and thank you for creating this series of tutorials. It was very helpful, and this is coming from someone that uses GIMP for the process, so that's also a plus.
I'm sure to be using these techniques here from now on. Great job!

Well, I hope to do an actual vector next time around, so I might have to find a method similar to your second lineart technique. But yeah, it was most helpful, and more importantly, I had fun working with it.

Does anybody know of a free to download program like photoshop that has the pen tool? I mean I have photoshop Elements 3 and 5, Corel Painter 3, and I tried a tiny bit of Open Canvas (that I downloaded somewhere) and as far as I can tell none of them have the pen tool (or they just hate me and make it hard to find). I'm not so into drawing and such that I'd want to spend lots of money to get CS3 or a similar program but every tutorial I've found has said they use the pen tool and the results look really good. ....... help?

Try GIMP. It's a similar program to Photoshop except you don't have to pay for it. It has all the basic functions like Photoshop.
Here's a link.

Huh... I never thought vector "around" the lines like that. Since I vector my own sketches they're a bit harder to grasp... Nice job.

I prefer that method to making a black silhuette first and then filling it with color shapes Or maybe you know yet another method?
Thanks

I only use vector tools to do my lining, I haven't tried to use the masking stuff to lay down my base colors. I'm currently using my tablet and wand tool to do the base colors and the shading is done 30/70 vector/tablet.

Whooooa... I hadn't any idea that you can do vector art (Yup, I say vector, not vexel ;D) this way! O___O Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Yes you can I find Photoshop much easier than vector-based programs ^^ And I tried them all, from Illustrator to Inkscape and Flash xD

ShirianekiZ In reply to tsukishoujo [2009-02-23 18:48:41 +0000 UTC]
I've done simpler vectors with my Paint Shop Pro 7. I tried one photoshop once, but I was too hard wor me to use. xD
By the way, when you are vectoring a picture, how large you usually make it be? (pixel x pixel)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
tsukishoujo In reply to ShirianekiZ [2009-02-23 18:57:19 +0000 UTC]
It depends, but usually I make it wallpaper resolution or a little bigger, like 2000x2000 I like working with big files xD I rarely resize them before submitting ^^" If you hit download on any of my submissions, you'll see how big are those vectors

You know, you're the one who made me meet with the Pen tool and therefore the one who caused me to grow out a suitable style for myself. Thanks to you, know my things look somewhat more appealing, and thanks to you I was able to improve a bit (or a lot). Thanks so much. Without those tutorials I wouldn't be able to improve even a single bit.

Actually, your timing is perfect. I was uploading my latest deviation, and I really update my gallery rarely these day. I used Pen tool a lot in this one, just like how I always do.
Before checking that tutorials of oyurs, I was totally a lame pixel artist you know. I hadn't known how to use a single thing on Photoshop, and god, I was doing everything on MsPaint >.> In an ironic way, one of the most complex things of Photoshop; Pen Tool, is the first thing I learned on Photoshop. It's all thanks to you. Now it's one of the most important factors on my artworks, and style.

Yeah, PS is a great program, but definitely not beginner-friendly ;] I know many people who stick to Paint because they find PS too hard and complicated to use...
Now that you know the pen tool, everything else is going to be easy

This is an awesome tutorial! ^ _ ^ I am trying to use thie method right now, but there's something I don't get ... How do you adjust the curve? D:
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
tsukishoujo In reply to Chamaguchi [2009-02-08 14:57:25 +0000 UTC]
Just click on one of the square points and try dragging them a little ;] Small handles will appear and by dragging those handles in turn, you'll be able to adjust the curve. I thought it was already written in the tutorial ^^" Sorry for not being clear enough.

are you sure vector tracing screenshots is against the policies? i thought they changed it because it is imposable to police and if its 'opular' they won't delete it.
they don't anymore.
and its pretty weak to tell people not to, or slander their chose on how to express their artistic-abilities.
(or so I've learn from my battles)
