--------------------------------------
As you can see, after several months of making promises, I finally finished my vectoring tutorial
This tutorial was strongly influenced by Unmei’s Tracing Tutorial on Ferricorp.Com. I learned how to vector from him. It’s a good, beginner-friendly tutorial and so far I was linking it to all people who asked me for vectoring guidelines but one day I decided to make my own version [longer, a little more detailed, with a few of pieces of advice and my own thoughts].
If there are any parts you find unclear, please don’t hesitate to note me. I’ll try to explain it for you once again in different words, if possible. Also, I’ll be more than happy to see your own vectors, made with the help of this tutorial. ^.^
I’d like to thank =Realm-Of-The-Shadows for checking my spelling and grammar
It’s also the right place to say ‘thank you’ to all my watchers who offered their help as beta-testers
Disclaimer:
Vectoring screenshots and scans [in other words: tracing them directly line by line] is against dA policy. As far as I know, if someone reports your vector trace while providing original screenshot/scan you used, it will be removed from your gallery. That’s why I encourage you to treat screenshot/scan vectors only as a form of practice before you move on to more complicated things. You can vector your own drawings and sketches, other people’s linearts and/or drawings [after asking them for permission, of course], realistic photos [photo traces are allowed, as realistic trace demands more time, skills and creativity than anime ones] – or images combined from several screenshots [as I sometimes do].
In other words - please keep in mind that when you submit screenshot/scan vector trace to your gallery, you do that at your own risk. According to dA policy, it doesn't belong here: it should stay on your hard disk. My intention isn't to encourage you to trace and I take no responsibility if you decide to submit a direct vector trace to dA.

I once asked myself how some vector linearts had lines thinner at the ends. I thought about that shaping method (before knowing it), but I thought no one would go through all that work >_> They do after all.
I have to try that
Once again, thanks ^^

Yeah, it's really tedious and tiring method, but a simple one, contrary to what some people think
Once again, no problem

I have a small problem. When I set my settings, just like yours are, before I even am able to do the shape it colors the area by itself.. And when I try to make this method.. its not working as yours does... its still not so nice at the edges.. :/

I have no idea what could be the reason or how to fix it O_o Maybe if you capture a screenshot and link it to me, I'll be able to help...

ok, I tried to do it again. I noticed i didnt do the shape layer before. Now another problem... i have no idea how you've done it. I read the tutorials but found just some help for that (which didnt work to, like you said it can be found on the left side of the path brush - no luck)..

So wait...this is a tutorial on how to trace other people's art? Not sure we need a lot of people figuring out how to do that.

tsukishoujo In reply to failing-at-flight [2008-09-27 19:35:45 +0000 UTC]
No. This is a tutorial showing simply how to vector. I'm using a screenshot as a reference picture here because it's the simplest way to explain vectoring process. I'm not encouraging people to trace. I stressed that in both Introduction part of the tutorial AND in Artist's Comment below the Introduction. I guess you didn't bother to read them.
Plus, I asked Ikue, Vector Gallery Director himself, if it's okay to post a tutorial that uses a screenshot as an example and he said it's perfectly okay. So if you have a problem with that, go ahead and complain to him directly

failing-at-flight In reply to tsukishoujo [2008-09-27 22:04:48 +0000 UTC]
I must apologize for that much, I only saw this section of the tutorial, however I still think it might have been a bit irresponsible to show yourself tracing someone else's art. There are literally (at least) hundreds of traced images of deviantART, and tracing requires almost zero talent if you didn't draw the original image. Nevertheless, as I said, I apologize for sounding rude.

tsukishoujo In reply to failing-at-flight [2008-09-27 23:12:07 +0000 UTC]
I'll think about what you said. Like I mentioned before, I used screenshot as a reference picture because of its simple lineart, coloring and shading - basically that's what I needed. Sure, I could have vectored and colored somebody's sketch or lineart after asking for permission which wouldn't be as controversive, but I knew that it would create hundreds of questions about coloring itself. And I didn't want that.
I guess I might as well replace Sakura screenshot with my Yondaime vector based on Damleg's drawing. I'm sure I could get her permission. Just curious, would that be acceptable from your point of view?

failing-at-flight In reply to tsukishoujo [2008-09-27 23:15:10 +0000 UTC]
That'd be more of a collaboration since you have permission, which is fine.
Again, I didn't mean to sound rude. Maybe it would suit this to put that disclaimer in the introduction artist comments into all the parts of this?

It's okay, I'm not angry or upset. I can see the difference between flaming and expressing an opinion and I don't mind the second one as long as it's expressed in a non-offensive way ;] I'll put the disclaimers now and think about editing the tutorial when I have a little free time.

I think you did very well for the first time ^^ And you used the more difficult method too ;] The only thing I would change is vectoring all the lines before posting the lineart Right now some lines are sharp and clear, while some are still blurry - if you make all the lines sharp, it'll be a really pleasure to look at
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
namine9221989 In reply to tsukishoujo [2008-07-13 10:56:48 +0000 UTC]
Actually I used both of your tutorial...the path and shape layer procedure. The problem is...I don't know why some lines are blurry when I use the path tool. I'll try to edit it, any suggestion how? thanks for the reply
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
tsukishoujo In reply to namine9221989 [2008-07-13 12:14:50 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm... so the sharp lines are the ones made with the method II and blurry ones are method I? I think there are two reasons for that blurry-ness:
- either you used different brush than the one I suggested when stroking the path
- or you enlarged the picture after using method I, which made the lines blurry... wait, those lines were blurry from the moment you stroked them or did they start looking like that later?
If they were blurry from the beginning, it's the brush setting.
Anyways, there isn't a way to edit it now ;/ You'll have to vector those parts once more if you want to correct it ^^"

I enlarged the picture...then the lines that used path suddenly looked blur
I'll try to vector it again haha!!! thanks

tsukishoujo In reply to namine9221989 [2008-07-13 17:47:12 +0000 UTC]
At least we know now what the problem was Method I of making the lineart isn't quite 'vector' - you can't enlarge the picture without loss in quality. With method II there's no such problem
I should emphasize it somewhere in my tutorial ^^"

I love your tutorial! I had never heard from 'shape' before! Thanks so much!
Though I do have a lil' problem. I have CS2 and when I select the pen 'shape' it doesn't show 2 lines like yours. Also, I can't seem to stroke the lines. This nembie needs help
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
tsukishoujo In reply to Sagittarius28 [2008-07-28 10:21:40 +0000 UTC]
It won't show two lines even in 'shapes' mode ;] It's always a single line - you must encircle the part of the lineart you want to vector from both sides with that single line, that's how you make it double I'm sorry if it's not clearly visible on the screenshot, I'll edit it soon to illustrate that step better ;]
