--------------------------------------
As you can see, after several months of making promises, I finally finished my vectoring tutorial
This tutorial was strongly influenced by Unmei’s Tracing Tutorial on Ferricorp.Com. I learned how to vector from him. It’s a good, beginner-friendly tutorial and so far I was linking it to all people who asked me for vectoring guidelines but one day I decided to make my own version [longer, a little more detailed, with a few of pieces of advice and my own thoughts].
If there are any parts you find unclear, please don’t hesitate to note me. I’ll try to explain it for you once again in different words, if possible. Also, I’ll be more than happy to see your own vectors, made with the help of this tutorial. ^.^
I’d like to thank =Realm-Of-The-Shadows for checking my spelling and grammar
It’s also the right place to say ‘thank you’ to all my watchers who offered their help as beta-testers
Disclaimer:
Vectoring screenshots and scans [in other words: tracing them directly line by line] is against dA policy. As far as I know, if someone reports your vector trace while providing original screenshot/scan you used, it will be removed from your gallery. That’s why I encourage you to treat screenshot/scan vectors only as a form of practice before you move on to more complicated things. You can vector your own drawings and sketches, other people’s linearts and/or drawings [after asking them for permission, of course], realistic photos [photo traces are allowed, as realistic trace demands more time, skills and creativity than anime ones] – or images combined from several screenshots [as I sometimes do].
In other words - please keep in mind that when you submit screenshot/scan vector trace to your gallery, you do that at your own risk. According to dA policy, it doesn't belong here: it should stay on your hard disk. My intention isn't to encourage you to trace and I take no responsibility if you decide to submit a direct vector trace to dA.

This is a prefect tutorial for begginners. It had all the essential instructions for those who aren't quite sure how to use photoshop. Unfortunately, i have to be difficult and ask how you make your lines curve. When you've made a single line, i can adjust the thickness but i can't seem to make it curve properly.
What am i doing wrong? sorry for being a nuisance but i really want to improve on my digital art

After you make a straight line, next thing you have to do is to click on one of those little points that appear on both ends of each line and, still holding that point, drag it a little. The line will bend and you'll see one or two handles appear. By clicking on the end of such handle and draging it, you can make the line curve more I thought I explained that in the tutorial, sorry if it wasn't clear ^^"

This tutorial is very helpful especially for beginners like me! I learned a lot! so that's how you do linearts!
I just really have a hard time using the pen tool. I think its a skill for you to manipulate it the way you want it to.
I have the same problem with ~MangaMistress, I can't seem to curve my lines properly and smoothly-as what it looks in your tutorial (my lines look pixelated and not smooth at all). What gives?
sorry, im a newb here

To be honest, I have no idea what might be a problem here ^^" If you follow all the steps, the result shouldn't be different from what you see in the screenshots O_o Maybe if you captured a screenshot of what you curves look like, I could say something more ;]

egad!! i get it! i get it!! i'm so stupid for asking that question!!!
its because when one edits the lines in photoshop, the lines are normally pixelated BUT when you save it as a jpeg image, you can see your lines perfectly fine!!
gee, sorry for my ignorance! now i know!! this tutorial is awesome!! thank you so much!! I'm currently working on one right now and there's no problem at all -->[link]
thanks again!

It wasn't dumb ^^" In fact, I thought you're asking without even trying first that's why I replied that way ;] If you tell me what exactly doesn't work for you in that method, I'll try to help you

i know how to do the path and anchor thing i just don't understand how to do dubble lines like you have here

tsukishoujo In reply to VasyaSolnyshko [2008-03-22 20:48:25 +0000 UTC]
Instead of making a single path of anchor points [and then stroking it], try to think of the line you're vectoring as of a shape - try to encircle that shape with your path, adding more anchor points until you join the beginning and the end of your path [while having pen tool set on 'shape layer' settings ;] In other words, after you make one line of anchor points, try to go back towards the first anchor point that you made to close the shape.

tsukishoujo In reply to GarnetWarrior [2008-03-15 12:56:31 +0000 UTC]
You can't stroke shapes, only paths What do you mean by being unable to stroke paths? It should be pretty simple, just as I've written in the Lineart I part O_o

this may sound stupid but seeing as you seem to know what your doing...do you know where the merge button is??

tsukishoujo In reply to MaskedWereWolfDevil [2008-02-13 11:58:20 +0000 UTC]
You mean how to merge the layers? Hmmm if I remember correctly, if you right-click on the layers, there should be a 'Merge Visible' option ;] I hope that helps ^^

Thanks so much for your tutorials! They are a big help and are helping me understand how to actually use my CS3.
I have a question though, in the finished lineart of this submission, I see that Sakura's eyes are filled in. How were you able to do that? I use the other method of making line art(not shape layers) and I don't understand how you made the eye colored in, since the way I make the lineart only creates lines. Did you use the brush tool and just paint in the eye? If not, could you please explain this to me? Thanks very much!

tsukishoujo In reply to ashleyjordan [2008-02-01 20:43:29 +0000 UTC]
I used the shape layers method for the eyes ;] That method allows you to paint what's inside the lines rather than the lines themselves

Try clicking on the 'Add to shape area' button if the shortcut doesn't work for you. Or check your shortcuts, maybe you don't have a default shortcut for that option, but a different one

Heh, I knew I would learn a lot from the tutorials posted by the club mentors. I find this part of your tutorial very helpful. ^^ I kind of had trouble understanding what exactly shape layers was, but it was dead obvious. XD
I think I'll try Photoshop soon for vectors now, though I'm curious to know if the shapes method will work in Illustrator.
All in all, thanks for taking time to post this tutorial. ^^

tsukishoujo In reply to SethlansKing [2008-01-06 00:30:48 +0000 UTC]
That method will work in Illustrator for sure my Lulu vector was done in Illustrator using it ;] You just have to set 'stroke' to none and 'fill' with the color you want your lineart to be if I remember correctly ;] The rest is identical.

Funny thing is that I unknowingly used this method in my earliest vectors for experimenting, but this tutorial has made me wanna take another stab at it. ^^
Here is the result of it after reading your tutorial: [link]
