name: Jin Ban (Jean Ban)
-15, Female
-born of a Chinese father and an American mother.
-from a young age she was convinced her father would have preferred a male child; to make up for this she dresses as a boy and tries hard to be the son her father wanted.
-her mother is named Janet, so she named her daughter 'Jean'. Her family and schoolmates pronounce Jean as 'Jin'.
-she started flying kites because it's a 'boy's thing' but developed a true love for it.
about her kite:
-the kite is based on the Jian , a pair of birds that each have only one eye and one wing, and depend on each other to live and are inseperable, which represent husband and wife.

Wow. I love the picture; it's really fantastic not only because of the colors and the detail, but also the designs and the character description. I read about the character and literally my jaw dropped. It sounds exactly like me. (Born to a Japanese father and American mother, dresses and acts like a boy because my father is the only male in our household since I have two other sisters; he talks to me a lot more when I act like a boy.) This is an amazing picture and I really love it; it's wonderful!

I have some friends who grew up in mixed-race families, so they tell me about little difficulties they live with. Although there is a bit more gender equality now, it's just not the same, they said.

About that note~
I'm also a Chinese Mandarin speaker, so it was confusing at first... but you may still be right. Possibly in another form of Chinese, such as Cantonese, it would have been correct. That may have been where you heard/learned it.

xD I don't know enough Chinese to make myself a proper name now, so I just scratched that out... but Mandarin in particular is difficult to pronounce for foreigners (I think) and I've always had a lousy memory so memorizing letters is going to be like AAAAAA BRAIN FREEZE
