Description
The real feature of this shot is the studio camera in the foreground. This is the camera that Dad used primarily in the Studio for portraits. We'll see if my suggestions did any good..... here's the story, Dad bought this camera and the stand that it goes on, used, when he started his business in 1947. He said it was pretty beat up so he painted it with that godawful speckle paint! I asked him if that was cherry underneath, since I knew most cameras of that day were...... It is. Anyway, I suggested that instead of buying up ugly old tables and refinishing them, "Why don't you strip this down and refinish it?" It does still work by the way.

I am not sure if I got that straight. But if he painted the part surrounding the lens, then I totally agree with you that the cherry color would look SO much more beautiful on it!!
That camera is amazing. I can't believe your dad has one ! I've only seen those on movies!!

Well there's that part and the underframe and the back as well. We'll have to rebuild the bellows.

He looks quite proud, and should be. That's quite a collection! I will say that I used to have a Brownie myself. No film, of course. Used to be my Grandmother's.

Well, this is going to sound very very self centered and arrogant, but before I say it, understand, my father doesn't always show his emotions about how much he loves his children. That particular look on his face only happens when I'm behind the camera and I slip into "portrait shooting mode". There's certain things that you say to get the smile on the face of the subject, and by the time i got to this point in the shoot, I had slipped into that mode.
So, he was actually very proud of me and what he had taught me, and he was pleased with himself that I had learned it 40 years ago.
Interesting that you noticed the look on his face.
I shot that one Brownie when we went on vacation when I was about 7 years old. It still works. So does you grand's probably.
Thanks for the comments!

1.) You don't sound self-centered at all. You learned great things. S'all good.
2.) I sold my Brownie at the flea market YEARS ago. I'm pretty sure the buyer didn't even know what they had bought. Or played the part.
3.) You're welcome.

What the oldest one you have???

TThealer56 In reply to fluffyvolkswagen [2010-02-17 19:29:15 +0000 UTC]
I think the oldest thing is that Voightlander & Sohn lens. There's a Primus camera that I think is around 1920. The box cameras that are under the one my Mom had are somewhere around that time as well.

Extremely ornery to? Iβm afraid I canβt follow? Do you mean heβs extremely over sensitive when it comes to feelings, getting compliments being proud of what he has accomplished? Or is it a physical thing?
Sorry for asking but itβs not always clear to me. Easy to get it wrong!
for me it is.

How do I explain.... He is a bit of a trickster, and a bit cantankerous.
You might also say he is a real character. He will do things just to aggravate Mom just to see her react. Nothing really too mean, just enough to make her upset a little.
Make sense?

I see now! A bit like my mom and dad. She getting al wind up not noticing heβs doing it and heβs sitting there with that boyish twinkle in his eyes! Isnβt that a typical thing man do!
A sign they still care.
