Here's a tl;dr though: I'm one of those people that think AT up and up became a different show by the turn of season 6, hell, by the mid-point of season 5. Before then, it was a wonderful show that was equally funny, creative, and intense, all wrapped around a narrative that progressively became darker and more serious... before they decided to go a more "abstract" route in S6 that ripped the soul of the show out and replaced it with idiotic storylines, meaningless themes, and pretty much devolving into what Rick and Morty gets mocked for. It did get better in S7 and S8, but it didn't have that magic that made early AT so good and was still plagued with episodes that I can only call filler-- and S9 sucks. God, I really fucking hate the finale, it is legitimately one of my least favorite cartoon episodes and barely got away from being the absolute bottom of the barrel-- Change Your Mind had more dignity than it.

Even though I technically consider AT a good show, don't be surprised if I ever demote it to okay since my personal feelings towards it are honestly more negative than positive, and that stems from how addicted I was to this show as a kid and how disappointing it was on revisit-- all that magic washed away by the 2nd half of the series. Yeah, can you tell I'm not a fan of the second half of season 5 to season 9? Not even Distant Lands was good and just reaffirmed the main problems AT suffers from, you can find out what I think they are in my ginormous review.

actual tl;dr: S1 to the first half of S5 good, the rest sucks, but that early stuff is enough to keep this show in the good range

UPDATE ON 10/1/2023: Well, color me surprised-- Adventure Time managed to put out content that I consider good... and it's been more than a decade that I've been able to say this. I'm not sure where and when I'll be able to go into my thoughts on Fionna and Cake since I've been busy as all hell lately, but what you should know is that in spite of a few key problems that I had with it along the way, the fact it focused on Simon, who I think I'd call my favorite AT character nowadays instead of Jake, more than made up for some of its faults. I'm so glad that there was almost no filler to be seen. Almost. The first 3 episodes were pretty slow, with the 3rd in particular wasting its time in the first half, but everything that came afterwards exceeded my expectations. Though... I can't be alone in thinking that "Cheers" was more of a new beginning than a true finale for the series and for Simon. It was still a satisfying end, but the way it ended tells me this isn't the end of the AT franchise-- I don't know how to feel about that. If they're going to continue to produce this level of quality, then sure, keep going. But if it goes back to being shit like AT was post-S4, then I want none of it.
