This scene was perfect for showing how much Varrick needs someone like Zhu Li. He's brilliant, but also a major ditz. He came up with a good, solid plan here... that had a huge gap.
Once he made the remote, he really didn't need the timer. If he'd removed it, he could have threatened their way to safety without being suicidal. 
It's really weird re-watching the episode knowing all Varrick's reassuring winks and smiles mean "Don't worry, I'll blow us both up before things get too evil." He earned the slap.

Zhu li would have definitely added her 2 cents making Varrick rethink his decisions on the bomb and just having a trigger.
I actually thought Varrick had a good solid plan that would have helped Bolin and escape but...
I literally just rewatched this with my sister, lmao you right about the reassuring winks and smiles.
