Description
Panting from fear & exhaustion, Amadi breathlessly explained in sparse detail what was chasing them: fire. The most feared killer out there. But there was not much time for talking, as it became evident this fire was out of control. Terrified animals hurtled here & there, many herbivores running towards the flames in blind panic. But Amadi & his cub pounded on, their breath short, but not allowing themselves to stop. The terror was real, & the danger evident, as the fire kept up with them, eating away their beautiful land as it went.
Then up ahead, Achieng's sharp eyes caught sight of a low cliff; a shred of hope.
"AM! Straight ahead...the c-cliff..."
Taking charge of the rest, Amadi grabbed Achieng by her scruff, & ran harder than before. Achi wriggled, knowing she was too heavy, but also knowing he would not put her down until SHE was safe. So her voice guided him nearer, & then told him to jump. And he leapt! It wasn't a high cliff, but Achi was nearly a teen now, & not light.
Still, by some stroke of luck, Amadi's paws found the ledge, & he swung Achieng up, her claws scrabbling for safety.
Gasping, she caught her breath, then turned....but Amadi was nowhere to be seen!
