Description
TIME TO DRAW SOME MECHSI really love alternate tech development paths. Give different people the same problem and they'll often solve it radically different ways.
So in Babyface's world there's going to be a ton of different design philosophies and solutions for the weaponry of each country/megacorp.
While the U.S. never uses conventional chassis, China just loves them. Maybe they've been influenced by Japan's mech obsession, I don't know.
One of the most feared Chinese chassis is known as the Ghost Tiger. This highly mobile weapons platform carries two enormous spin guns. A powerful magnetic field keeps a bullet in an electrified sabot in a circle, which is continuously accelerated by more electric fields. Equivalent rail or coilguns would be over forty feet long.
In addition to heavy firepower, Ghost Tigers are equipped with flexible rubbery armor with non-newtonian fluid properties. Fast impacts cause it to harden locally.
All these different chassis are fun, I'm going to try to keep them varied. This particular design is far from finalized though.
It reminds me of something though... [link]
Photoshop CS3, Wacon Tablet. I referenced mars rocks but nothing is traced, I'm trying to teach myself how to draw rocks by hand.

Love the design as well as the specs. The non newtonian armor is inspired, a bit akin to the personal shields used in Dune though physical and not electromagnetic.

Amazing detail that you got into those rocks, I do like how they came out! You are so good at getting just the right texture in your drawings.I like your idea for it's armor a lot too.
It looks like if you snuck up behind it and pushed it would fall forward, and not have a very good way of preventing it's fall... **tries pushing over mech**

Texture is haaaaard, it's my favorite thing to draw but it is all sorts of difficult. Glad you like it!
This iteration of the mech design uses a dynamic balancing system, constantly monitoring itself and adjusting position. However, like a human it would be constantly changing position which probably wouldn't be good for aiming, so it'll be getting a redesign with more stable legs

Oh man, one of the things that gets me about your future-tech designs is the extent to which they overlap with real-world prototypes and concepts...Here, for example, the over-the-shoulder propulsion system makes me flash on DARPA's SoloTrek ([link] ). It's elements like this that make your designs so unsettling-ly believable.
ALSO--the weirdly articulated limbs. Okay, it wouldn't be too weird if those arms were only composed of two segments--but after a moment of study, you see that *third* segment nestled close to the body! *shudder* There's something so compelling yet WRONG about obviously functional limbs that resemble ours but are clearly....different.
Same goes for the legs...I wouldn't go so far as to compare them to my ([link] ), but they *do* resemble the Metal Gear Ray, which I suspect was probably an influence on both of us. And in this case far more unsettling for the way the being is balanced fully upright on two ballet-pointe legs, without the addition of a supporting tail or additional appendages. (Would multiped aliens find us unsettling for the same reason??)
Lastly, "facelessness"--in this case, a kind of full-body facelessness; featurelessness, I guess, would be a better characterization. Creepy in the same way as a mannequin, or a T-1000.
And that's not it after all, because there's also the weird disparity between the faceted geometricality of this entity with its implied organic elements...It all adds up to a very disconcerting impression.
Haven't even touched here on the masterful modelling through shading and the rendering of the environment, whcih again contributes to that "uncanny valley" aspect through the startling contrast, but...Do I really have to?
Beautiful work, as always!

I love your idea behind this and the fact you have the scientific knowledge is a plus. You are capable of making this concept believable

Man, magnificent rendering on the mech, and the background looks great! Very nicely painted, nice lighting and sense of space, good simple color scheme ... the jaw-dropping part for me though was the arm design. Wow! So original, and it looks very robotic too.
Mentioning China, I'm assuming the mars-scape is a stand in for some Xinjiang type desert landscape? It would also be pretty cool to see something like this in the back [link]

Thanks!

I say this every time, but I gotta say it again. I love the ideas that you put into your descriptions. The magnet-accelerated bullet idea is absolutely brilliant, and one that I've never encountered before in any of my science fiction readings. Very original! I like the idea of the non-Newtonian hardening of its armor as well; great extrapolation from existing technology.
Great job on the visuals as well. This is a very unique mech design. It's a good-looking design, elegant but also awkward in a function-over-form sort of way.
Nice rocks. I'm missing core and crevice shadows in that main shadow behind the mech, though.
By the way, do you have a deviation description, or perhaps a journal entry, that explains the overall setting/storyline for these guys? I'm picking up pieces and clues from these descriptions, but I want to know more!

I think (and I fully admit I may be wrong) this setup is similar to some particle accelerators, accelerating the charged particle with an electric field and keeping it in a circle via a magnetic field (F=q(v x B)! I finally used that equation!). I'm just using a bullet instead of a particle.
Though I've never seen anything like this in sci-fi either, which is somewhat odd.
There are two things that make this gun setup a bit more difficult to deal with than a railgun, which may be why people wouldn't have it in sci-fi. Air in the chamber would limit the total voltage (otherwise there would be arcing). I think this could be mitigated by either a vacuum chamber in the gun or simply accelerating it more slowly over a longer period of time. The other issue is that any failures are catastrophic, but high speed monitoring and adjustments of the bullet and field should be more than enough to fix that. I'd expect one to explode every once in a while though
Thanks for the crit!
I'm still building this world, but I'll make sure I put up a journal detailing it

Neat, what are those pillars in the distance? With the circular plate at the top.

Awesome tech, fully realistic design, but why the feeble-beeble arms?

turbofanatic In reply to nemo-ramjet [2010-05-14 11:55:22 +0000 UTC]
They're only there for picking things up (like more ammo) and whatever else you might need arms for. Most of their length is folded up so it can reach the ground pretty easily.
You'd never want to use them in combat though

Sorry, I noticed the folds now. All those joints and weird extra arm parts, the arm extending like an accordion... Deliciously alien. Btw, do you have any engineering background?

I like seeing all the cool ideas you come up with! Crazy guns ftw
Also those rocks turned out really cool. They're very flat like cell-shading but that's okay

Really intriguing mecha design, though I'm guessing the arms aren't used for combat(at least not hand to hand) maybe more for maintenance or gun carrying?
Either way, this is very well rendered and the description with it really adds depth!

Yep, they're weak but very useful, usually they're completely folded up.
Thanks!
