Description
My animation director reccommended that I work on my cartoon animals (you know, for variety's sakes) and suggested that I hit my animation textbooks and just draw, draw, draw. This is one of my better sketches so I inked it and quickly threw in color in photoshop. I'm still trying to master the whole "has cartoon anatomy but still has structure" Preston Blair-ish style.
Ripper Roo is probably my favorite non-scientist villain in Crash Bandicoot. The PS1 Crash Bandicoot games had some incredible character designs and Ripper Roo was no exception.
Before anyone asks why his eyes are "wrong", let me explain. I hate to say it, but this was partially influenced by the Crash Bandicoot manga. (hence just the irises are swirly as opposed to his entire eyeball) Most of the liberties they took with the game characters were rather lame, but for some reason I really enjoyed their version of Ripper Roo. He's this scheming researcher who acts like he's giving Crash food and shelter out of the kindess of his heart when in reality he's waiting for Crash to let his guard down so that he can steal his power crystal. Seen here. It takes liberties with the games but in Ripper's case it arguably works. The rest of the manga is just "okay".
So I tried to work the manga version's design and attitude into the game version. I don't know why, but I like the idea that Ripper Roo is secretly Cortex's most intelligent creation, but the experiments shattered his brain into an unrepairable mess which means most of the time he's a gibbering nutball and therefore next to useless, to the point where his upper arms have to be restrained so he doesn't go and rip people to shreds. (Get it? Rip? Because he's RIPPER Roo! ...sorry.)
Still, in Crash 2, it shows that he has some moments of sanity. I can't imagine how he'd act in his lucid moments of clarity but I'd imagine it isn't good.
Before anyone says anything, YES, I know his eyebrows are dark blue in the game. I changed his eyebrows on purpose so that they'd match his mustache. Otherwise it just looked too isolated.
Upped the contrast with my cel shading. It worked a LOT better than my last cel shading attempts.
I had fun with this. I might do some more quickie cartoon experiments.

This looks amazing! It gives me lots of inspiration for my Crash Bandicoot fanfic and Crash's "reunion" with Ripper Roo in the second gam-
"It's Doctor Roo for you, young lady! And you had better watch your language when you're talking about me, 'cause I'm a gentleman and I have nothing to fear!"
Okay, okay Doctor Roo! Geez! Anyway, I agree with your theory about him being Cortex's most intelligent creation, who got insane after intense experimentation. In my oinion, Cortex abandoned him, after he lost his sanity and was no longer considered "worthy" of the Cortex Commandos. Bad move Cortex, really bad move...

You better believe there was one.
It was only in Japan, so I can understand why it's not well-known, but I say it's worth a look. I really like their characterization of Ripper Roo, anyway.

I'm lovin' this picture sooooo much. I mean, not only is the style unique, but it makes Ripper Roo look so cute! There aren't that many pictures of him when he's sane-ish like this one, and this is probably the best rendition I've seen of it.
Great job, I have to say! Looooove Ripper Roo

Awww, thank you for the comment.
I will admit, that's one of the reasons why I drew this. For some reason, not many people draw his doctor persona when, in a way, having Ripper Roo have little patches of sanity where he's a genius with thoughts and motives is more interesting than him just being a raving lunatic 24/7. It helps flesh out the character a bit more.
I'm just glad my more unique take on him worked.

Cool, nice work!
I've only ever fought him in Crash Bash, when he appears in the 3rd Pogo game
There's a Crash MANGA?!? I will look into this...

Wait, if there's a Crash manga, there must be a Spyro manga...
Anyway, looks awesome Rebzy. Your feet are improving, for certain. Best ones yet. Now if only they'd bring on someone like you for future installments of Crash... fans fix everything.

Actually, all the Crash Manga predate Spyro. They didn't do anything for Warped and beyond, I believe.

I had no idea that there was a manga. Wow. Thats actually kind of cool.
By the way, I absolutely adore the pic. It fits Roo's personality insanely well. (No pun intended, or was there?) I could easily imagine him being a truly mad genius.

Yeah, there is a manga, and all of volume 1 and the first two chapters of volume 2 are available in a translated form on Crash Mania.
It's pretty goofy and they take an entirely different approach, but it's still a fun, light read anyways.

Just read them. The Komodo Bros were pretty funny, and Joe loomed pretty awesome.
