Description
Happy Holidays, all! I'll admit that this WASN'T the next pic I wanted to get done. However, it IS a pic I've been meaning to get off my plate for quite some time. And with Christmas and New Years upon us, it just felt like the time to pull the trigger on it. After all, this always felt like a Christmas/New Years-type scene in my mind. You know, redemption, rebirth, togetherness...all that fun stuff. ^_^For those who are wondering, this is loosely based on a scene I'm planning for late in my Spectacular Spider-Man fanfic series (which I'm STLL looking for co-writers for, so if you're at all interested or KNOW anyone who might be interested, my door is always open ^_^). But first, a little bit of background/spoilers, to put this picture in context. Throughout the course of my fics, Peter and Gwen find themselves slowly inching closer back together. But between finding out that Peter is Spider-Man, gaining Spider Powers of her own, after being experimented on by Miles Warren (who becomes the Jackal, after being exposed to the Globulin Green) and barely surviving an attack by Harry Osborn, as the new Green Goblin (and attack where her father, George Stacy, is crippled), Gwen reaches a breaking point. As such, she heads abroad and away from Peter, in the desperate hope that some soul searching will help her decide if a life with Spider-Man is really something she can handle. She tells no one where's she's going, save for Mary Jane.
However, months later, Peter has his mind swapped with Otto Octavius, who places his old body in a chemical-induced coma and proceeds to take Spider-Man's life for his own. So Mary Jane, sensing something is very wrong, contacts Gwen, telling her that she can't wait anymore and it's time for her to come home. Returning to New York, now as Spider-Woman, Gwen fights alongside Anti-Venom to defeat Octavius and restore Peter's mind to its rightful body. But when Anti-Venom leaves to return to California, Peter and Gwen are left behind to deal with the fallout of her leaving. In the ensuing discussion, Gwen reveals what prompted her to become Spider-Woman and how the resulting transformation has left her feeling more confident to return home.
Which brings us to the image in question. The basic image is Peter and Gwen finally reconciling, at the perfect time of year to do it, no less. This was more or less how I've wanted it to look for years. However, when I was asking for ideas for my 100,000-Hit Commemorative pic, came to me, with the same basic idea, only including Peter and Gwen being inadvertently spied upon by a character from another series Greg Weisman was very closely tied to (bonus points if you can guess who). I thought it was too good to pass up, so I gladly stole the idea (don't worry, he didn't mind). So we've got romance, a bit of humor and enough of a holiday theme to make it timely. ^_^
Oh, and yes, the background is a photograph. I'll admit, I got lazy and took a shortcut. I just didn't have the time (or the strength) to draw a background that detailed.
Well, that's all for now. Hope to like what you see. And I hope you enjoy whatever branch of the Holiday Season you end up celebrating. Peace be with you. ^_^

Well, this has quickly become one of my most popular postings, which I guess is a testament to just how much everyone really wants to see this. I mean, I can't be the only one to have drawn this concept, right? But people are just going nuts for it. Here's hoping that Marvel pulls the trigger on something like this, once Gwen gets her powers in the current Spider-Man animated series.

What do you mean, "roleplay"? There are several meanings for that term.

I'm looking for co-writers to do my SSM fics. If you're interested, I could give the synopses of the ideas I've come up with, so far.

Well, I just sent you a Note, with the synopsis. It's pretty extensive, though, so you may need a little time to get through it.

Interesting. I admit, I'm more of a PeterxMJ fan, but Gwen being a heroine would be a plus to her relationship with Peter. That way they can watch each other's backs.
Oh, and happy holidays for ya.

Well, I totally get that. I mean, I grew up with Peter and MJ and was just as infuriated as anyone when Joe Quesada killed it.
Still, I thought bringing Gwen's spider powers into the mix was a cool way to kind of see what would happen if we turned left, instead of right on this one particular moment in Spider-Man's chronology that, for the longest time, Marvel considered untouchable. In fact, I'm actually kind of hoping that's what we'll get to see when she gets her powers in the current animated series. And that's really for the same reason Spider-Gwen became such an overnight sensation, in the first place...because after 40 years, people are just sick to death of being forced to ONLY think of Gwen Stacy as JUST "Peter Parker's dead girlfriend". They wanted something more from her...and Spider-Gwen gave it to them.
Besides, I really think Stan Lee said it best. No matter what women Peter ends up with in his life, the fact of the matter is, Gwen Stacy will ALWAYS be his one true love.
But having said all that, as a point of interest, if you'd still like seeing Peter and MJ together, check out the comic series, "Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows". It's actually pretty interesting in that it's similar to the Peter/Gwen idea I'm using here, but it's Mary Jane, instead. And then, of course, there's their kid...^_^

Peter has already enough weight in his head with Uncle Ben's death. Adding Gwen's only compounds more on how much the guy has suffered over the course of his life. And I agree, it's kind of sad that they only use Gwen as a reminder of how he failed to protect a loved one, yet again.
I might check it out sometime, thanks for telling me.

Well, I think Moviebob said it best..."At some point, we've got to stop forcing 'legacy comics' and comic adaptations to be defined by a handful of one-time, edgy, boundary-pushing books from the late-80s, and the avalanche of mediocrity they begat in the 90s." Granted, Gwen was killed off in the 70s and he was mostly pointing the finger at DC comics when he said that, but Marvel has a problem with being stuck in time with certain things, themselves. Primarily the fact that they haven't seen a success story yet that they won't milk 'til it gives powder. Just ask Venom.
But yeah, they come up with something that becomes successful and they just focus on that one thing and never grow out of it. I mean, okay, yes, when Gwen initially died, it WAS shocking. It WAS boundary-pushing. It WAS edgy for its time. And you know what? After 40 years, the fans have pretty much gotten over it. It's like when they kept bringing Jean Grey back to life just so they could keep killing her off, again and again, just because it went so well, the first time. Sure, that initial death was a gut-check. But after the fourth or fifth time, there's just no point to it, anymore. In fact, I actually think that one of the smartest decisions the 90s X-Men animated series made, overall, is that they actually DIDN'T kill Jean during the Dark Phoenix Saga. It was nice to see them go the other way with it.
Even with Spectacular Spider-Man, there are rumors that, had the series continued, Greg Weisman actually had no intention of killing Gwen off. If that's true, even though this was still 2011 and Spider-Gwen wasn't even a gleam in anyone's eye yet, the fact that Gwen could have stuck around would have already been a SERIOUS game-changer. So I would have been very curious to see what might have happened, had Weisman been given the opportunity to actually end the series on his own terms.
Yeah, I think you might find it very interesting. Granted it's a whole "parallel universe" thing (and rumor has it there have been some issues between Joe Quesada and the Creative Team), but it's still a very cool concept...at least, in MY opinion. ^_^

One never knows. I mean, we already know she's going to get her powers at some point in the current animated series, so it wouldn't be surprising for Marvel to pull the trigger on it.

Well, I'm talking more about in the comics, where they just drained him so dry that they had nothing more they could do with him. Let's hope Gwen can avoid the same fate...
...Especially since the main reason she became such a hit is because she made the fans realize something they were only really aware of on a subconscious level before...that after 40 years, people are sick and tired of being forced to ONLY think of Gwen Stacy as JUST "Peter Parker's dead girlfriend". They wanted something more...and Spider-Gwen gave that to them.
