Nice job! I go about the order of the head a little different though.
1) I draw circle and guidelines
2) I draw triandles where ears will be
3) Add eyes and nose (for side view, whole muzzle)
4) Add mouth
5) Add hair
6) Finalize ears and add cheek fur

Ahh, I use it almost always, it's rare that I don't because, for some reason or another, I won't get things lined up right without it.
