~~~Ultimate reference sheet comish for of his dragon, Blue!
I've had the pleasure of drawing this gorgeous dragon a few times already, so I was really excited when Blue asked me to do his latest ref sheet. I was also excited because this was my first ultimate ref sheet comish! I actually set this up...like right before doing Muzafr's and Skeezit's in the horizontal format.
Lots of previews and e-mails exchanged over this one. All detail shots, colours, and info were approved by Blue. The background shots of Blue were previous pieces I've done of him. The thunderstorm behind the wings is from here: [link]
Commissions are still avail~
This is an example of a cell-shaded Ultimate ref sheet, with essential detail shots added. As you can see, these are very customizable and vary by character/design. Ultimate refs are also available in flat colours and gradient-shading as well.
Build-your-own ref sheets are also available. BYO sheets are where you name how many body/detail shots you want and I give you a quote, or you name your price and I list you your options.
Thanks a lot Blue! Pleasure working for ya again!
I.. actually wonder how well you can do Whitewing, since he is a difficult character and an unique one by himself. Still, that doesn't mean I can be lazy and not make one myself. x'D
furururururururr. C:
It'd be expensive, too. So let me know when you're open for trade, because I haven't done that in a while. >w>
Man, I won't be able to open trades for...years, possibly. I just can't, my art is my income.
Thanks for understanding. ^^ My life is also kind of up in the air at the moment, as I might be joining the military here soon.
Just be sure you're not underselling yourself! Your work is really nice, you could totally do commissions. ^^
Military? Oh, my gosh. Good luck with that! Does that mean you'll.. disappear.. when you join the military? It saddens me to see people go, if and when they do.
Underselling? Mind if you can tell me how much I should be selling my work then?
Yep! *fingers crossed* I'll find out officially in the summer, but I've been filling out mile-long forms the past couple weeks, hehe.
I'll do my best not to disappear! I'll probably drop off the grid for at least a few months at a time, because I'll have to go through some extra-extensive training for what I'm hoping to do. But hopefully once I get settled in I'll at least be able to post personal work and open commissions intermittently or on breaks.
Hmm, pricing is all up to you. I base mine a lot on time taken - I'm usually pretty busy, especially when I was taking classes full time, so definitely take that into account. I also upped my prices after I got my Cintiq to help cover that cost, so you can also take into account what kind of software you're using, if you upgrade, it, etc. Because the software might up the quality of the art, but also might affect the time it takes. I price my pieces depending on complexity and time taken, but another option you might like is charging by the hour or intervals thereof.
I see, well it seems that you have been looking forward to this sort of thing!
I do want to consider how long things would take, but I also want to consider the pricing people are willing to pay for... I have a Bamboo tablet, and only PaintTool SAI. I don't have photoshop... so. :c
Oh yeah, I'm really excited! I've set my sights really high...I mean like, atmospheric at mach 3 high. XD
Another thing that might help is look around on Groups that have links to people who are taking commissions who also use your same software, and see what they're charging, just to give yourself an idea of the 'general' price of commissions. I've also noticed a ton of people taking point commissions, which are cool to use on DA itself, (I use them to keep up my premium and gift them sometimes,) but also insansely convenient for people who don't know how to use/don't have a PayPal, and then after a few months or a year or however long, you can open PayPal commissions alongside or instead of point commissions.
I am actually doing point commissions, but they are very specific. I only do Atonium designs as of now. Perhaps I can make my adoptables point adoptables. Right now they are draw-to-adopt because I want to see people try instead of just buying things. I appreciate the effort of things, and not just the fact that people have money and just want to spend it in many ways possible.
I have paypal, but I don't think I'll open it up to the public anytime soon. I'll be sure to note it to people I feel I can trust they will pay for it. It's a good idea to look around and see the general price of things. Start of a little cheap, get popularity and more demand, then prices go up. That's the rule of law.
Thank you so much for your input and I am just as happy to talk to you! I wish you the best of luck should your dream goal be reached.
That's really cool! I agree about actually drawing the adoptable to get it - how do you do your adopts like that? Do you hold each adoptable like a mini-contest, or just reserve it for the person who draws it?
Payment up-front is my best friend, and I really recommend that as a policy should you open PayPal commissions. I've been ripped off enough and learned my lesson that I never do work without it paid up-front, or at least a down payment. I mean, when it comes down to it, you're not only getting ripped for the money, but also for the time taken, the effort, etc...and it's just not a good feeling. Also, I have a separate e-mail that I use for art correspondence/PayPal, so it's not like I'm giving out my personal e-mail.
You're welcome so much, happy to help! And great talking to you too! If you ever have any other questions or just want to chat or whatever, just shoot me a note. Best of luck to you as well! Thanks a bunch!
No, no. No mini-contest. They are not first-come first-serve either. They are held for an individual and they are given a week to draw it, and if they don't, it will be put off hold to the next individual who wants it. In a sense they are, but in a sense they're not. Customs are always available too.
I like to be paid at least 60% up front, enough of an incentive to be drawing, and enough of an incentive for the commissioner to keep up his or her part of the deal. The 60% is usually a sketch, a rough one, and an A-OK for me to continue. I'm sorry to hear that you've been ripped, but it is a common thing, sadly.
I'll be able to note you whenever I could. Feel free to note me as well!
It looks super nice! The only thing I found was maybe a typo; in the description it says he only has three toes on his hind feet, but you've drawn in four.
At any rate, a lovely ref sheet and a very beautiful dragon!
Thanks! And thank ya for pointing that out, I'll fix it in a jiff! We originally had three toes, then added four - forgot to change that! :0
