Some more insight into my process on one of several pieces I am currently working on (I really have a lot I have to post).

Naruto as a kitsune, Sasuke as an oni, and Sakura as a tree spirit or something.

The primary sketch and the final sketch are shown as they are, with the figures matching in height. The difference between the two is that I changed the spacing between the figures and added more background and detail.

The primary sketch is rather rough, as you can see. It takes only a few minutes to sketch out like this.

Refining it takes a bit longer. Don't be surprised if refining sketches takes longer than sketching them. If you want to do something well, don't rush it. Take it easy, crank your fav music and just work through it one step at a time. Same goes for inking.

I'm still not sure how I'm coloring it. Maybe I'll scan a clean copy (erased off all the pencil) for digital coloring and color the original with copics.

Cardstock and microns.

"Don't rush it." I'm not ashamed to admit that's been my biggest problem with learning to draw: I've always tried drawing too fast.

Either way, this whole thing is very informative and helpful. You've provided me some useful information for refining my drawing skills.

Oh dear lord, YOU ARE SO MUCH BETTER AT INKING BY HAND THAN I AM!!!

Why do you have to be so good? If I had inked that, there'd be over 9,000 more errors than your measly 2.

How do you fix your inking errors? I WANT TO KNOW!! D:

Well, I've had a lot of practice, for one. I've been inking for years.

I usually clean up errors in photoshop and use adjustment layers for levels to darken up the lines.

5 or so years of inking have gotten me next to Nil improvement. I've even gone so far as to stop inking my art.
(As seen in my most latest works.)
(But don't worry, I'm not asking you to check out my gallery. I'm not a whore like that. )
(You'd probably wish you didn't see it anyway...)

Any tips you've got to offer maybe? (I already use my full arm when making drawing motions, just to get that one out of the way. )

Um.... Practice. Inking's not like drawing. You have to be really aware of the pressure and you use shorter strokes, always with even pressure.

Impendidngdoom46 In reply to TwinEnigma [2009-07-13 05:34:04 +0000 UTC]

But shouldn't you change the pressure if you want lines with varied widths?
I was under the impression that that was what you were supposed to do.

TwinEnigma In reply to Impendidngdoom46 [2009-07-13 13:31:13 +0000 UTC]

It depends on what kind of lines you're inking.

Hair details I generally use longer strokes with light pressure, but actual heavy lines I try to keep pressure the same.

I also use different width microns when I ink. Thin lines are all .005 or .01; mediums I tend to use .02 or .03; thick lines I use .05 or higher.

Hmmm, you use all of the same ones I do (except for the .02, I don't have that one) but I generally only use the .005 and .01 microns. I used to use the .03 a lot, but not so much anymore. I've never used anything higher than a .07.

I'll try out your tips next time I ink something. Thanks for the tips!

I don't do anything like that. X3 Generally I just start penciling crap and there's tons of extra lines and no real direction from the start of it.

Heh. maybe I should do a WIP thing that shows how I do a pencil drawing.
I do have a WIP or two for a digital drawing I did... it's in my scraps.

So your saying Sakura is a Kodama: [link] )

and I love this, I'm can't say I'm too surprised as to how similar it is to my Map Making style, but I do find it pleasing to see that I go through a similar process as an excellent artist such as yourself?

TwinEnigma In reply to Arkkeeper [2009-07-04 15:17:36 +0000 UTC]

xD Yeah, basically.

It's a really basic process. A lot of people do it. xD
