Round 2 - "Wake me up"

aka hi my name is Twin and I am a Dragonlance fan and also this kind of murdered me. Also this is huge.

word count 599 and I only managed to reference one line from Dragons and Elves in the title. Also, one of Gabby's party members - the ghost wizard - makes his BONUS APPEARANCE BECAUSE THERE IS ANOTHER DRAGONLANCE FAN IN THIS CONTEST.

“Let me in.”

The voices of the dragons roll over each other, like the crash of thunder and the rushing hiss of something alien and familiar all the same. The words rush together, mashing up and over each other, until they fade into whispers, as if they were echoing rumbles of a summer storm.

“Let me in.”

Gabby feels her knees knocking together as she stares, frozen in place, caught on the threshold between everything she thought she knew and a dizzying, endless twilight world. All thought of what was happening behind her, of Ceci, Merllun and the cult and the crystal in her hand (her soul, they said), fled her mind entirely.

Before her, the massive five-headed dragon stretches her – how does she know that the dragon is a her, a part of Gabby wonders madly - wings, nearly blotting out the sky. Each head moves of its own accord, lowering itself to regard her and she is never more aware of how utterly small she is. Some of those teeth are almost as big as she is and there is nothing resembling kindness in the glowing, absolutely awful eyes looking at her.

Distantly, she wonders if this is what the goat in Jurassic Park felt like.

The dragon rumbles, black head craning and arcing as the red head lowers.

“Let me in.”

Oh my god, I am the goat, Gabby’s mind supplied, which was not helpful at all. Maybe she’s like a T-Rex. If I don’t move, she won’t see me.

The green head leers as the white head chuffs in clear amusement, the sound rolling over her so hard that she rocks in place. Throwing out a hand to steady herself, Gabby catches a glimpse of a line. It’s so thin that she might not have noticed it, if it didn’t happen to be glowing.

“Let me in and I will show you how to use that power.”

Gabby looks up. The dragon’s heads hover closely, rising and falling, always moving, but never come closer than they are.

She chances another look at the line and, this time, follows it up as it cuts into a wide oval portal. On the other side, past the glowing line, is the world she’d come from.

“Let me in.”

And this time, this time, she hears the cloying whispers, the ones that are overshadowed by the wake of the booming overlap of voices. ("Listen," says the ghost in his black robes, "Listen.")

Let me out.

The dragon wants out. She’s trapped here, wherever this is.

Gabby doesn’t feel trapped, however. She knows, somehow, that she can step forward or backwards without any problem – although, if she’s being real with herself, there’s no way in hell she’s going towards the gigantic, terrifying five-headed murderdragon. It’s just not happening, not in a million years.

There’s a great rumbling snarl that crashes down, as the heads shift again. Lightning crackles between the teeth of the blue head as it lowers until it is eye level with her.

“Decide. Now.”

She clutches her crystal close – it is hot, burning hot - and squares herself, right on the line. For a moment, it feels like the whole universe has its eyes on her. They said it was her soul, but they also said it was power, a power only she could use – she and one other, the dragon before her.

“No,” she says.

A distinct and distant feeling of approval washes over her and she knows she’s made the right choice.
“No,” she repeats, and the crystal thrums, light exploding from between her fingers.

This image slayed me. I kept asking why I did this to myself and then I went oh yeah, because it'll be SICK. And it is.

Also, I did promise dragon heads.

And I swore I'd include a bonus, cause Dragonlance fandom, and there he is, my trash son, Raistlin Majere aka "the ghost wizard Gabby keeps referring to, who literally is probably here just to thwart Takhisis again", radiating his approval of thwarting her. Gabby doesn't know who he is yet, not really - she knows he's a wizard, dead and also a bit of a jerk.

EMBRACE THE GOAT, GABBY.

I did want to make Gabby smaller, but I wanted her to still be very very visible. Also, figuring out how to smoosh five dragon heads in there was a pain, but I did it! The original file is literally 13x27 at 300. I can't even full-view this without scrolling on my 1920x1080 monitor, even when I brought it down to it's posting dpi.
