(lol 6 month late reply) pretty much all of my drawings are done within a day! If they take longer then it's either because I'm making a point of taking a long time to do one well and very detailed, which is exceptional, or more so because with work etc these days I sometimes can't get a lot of time in on one so I'll just do a bit here, a bit there until it's finished. The latest one could have been done in a day but it's taken three sessions to do it!

Great work! The black smoke looks really scary.

Thank you

I think after the two or three previous ones I'd gotten used to what colours were good for a geonosian landscape, as well as the smoke. I think this is my favourite of my star wars drawings so far, in terms of drawing quality.

I should really get round to doing some more soon... I've got a bunch of droids I've been meaning to draw for ages; though there are also many other drawings I'd love to do. We'll see... usually what I end up doing is just what I feel like on the spur of the moment.

It really is an amazing work! And I really hope that you other projects will come out fine, too!

Find out if you like

I've managed to get myself into gear and started on the remaining star wars drawings I'd planned all those years ago. Reasons I left them so long :
A) at the time I felt like I needed to get better at drawing in order to make them look good (I was 12...)
B) things like camera droids really weren't as interesting to draw as war ships and stuff; and they had relatively hard, detailed backgrounds too
C) after too much of enything I'll get fed up for a while - as was the case here. After a bunch of star wars drawings, I drew some other stuff for a while, then never really got back into full swing as I had when I first started the whole 'project'.

And now, after a handful every year, I'm coming to the end of it. Thankfully. I probably will finish too, as I tend to generally do drawings not one by one, but a few at a time in a stretch. This current stretch is of 8 droids from episode I (but many, if not all, seen in most of the other movies too). Right now I've done and uploaded three of them, so five more to go... I'll upload them to the group once all eight are done.

I can truly understand you, same with me here. I often don't feel skilled enough for pics that are in my mind.
Anyway good luck with your projects!

Yeah it was frustrating being a kid, only capable of certain level of drawing, and wanting to make things look so much better but unable to...
But of course on the other hand the only way to get better is through experience and practice, discovering new techniques. What I ended up doing was leaving the few I really, really wanted to look good in the back of my mind, then doing loads of others in the meantime... then one day I'd think 'hey, I'm better now - let's get that old idea on to paper'.

your stuff is good, I'm sure with a bit of effort you could make some impressive work
I often don't feel skilled enough either... I see you do a lot of pencil drawings, so that's quite similar to me. I got better by discovering and practising new techniques of drawing over the years - I'll cheat and tell you some of the things I learnt
First big step was when I stopped colouring with felt-tips and started using colouring pencils... that was a long time ago, but it made a big difference.
Next big step was adding shadows. Easy to do, and it helps a fair bit.
After that I got better wit shading - first by realising that it looked better using the same colour but pushing more or less to get darker and lighter bits (instead of using a light and a dark colour, for example) and after that finding out that better yet was to do a 'base coat' in black - all the shading (just the shading) in black - many parts end up light grey, but the really dakr places are more black. And then, go over on top of that, in the same way, with the colouring pencil. I've practices that and I feel my drawings look much better that way. Just when you do light colours (ex. yellow, white) it looks better to shade first with light grey, and not black.
And lastly... back in 2007, when I was 16, I realised that the biggest thing that was stopping me from doing really good drawings was not the inability to dpo them, but me thinking I wasn't good enough. There was one where I decided to sit down and 'just do it' - I spent a lot of time and effort on it, but still now I think it's one of my best drawings - when something looks really hard to draw... don't think about it. Just do it. Draw it one step at a time, thinking about what bit you are doing at the time and not the whole thing... and when you're done you might surprise yourself I certainly did - this one ended up far better than anything else I'd done before then - [link]

Good luck

Thanks so much for your great tips! I think your totally right about "thinking that I'm not good enough" to do this. That's my problem, I guess. But you really encouraged me and I think I'll start one of my bigger projects now!

That's the spirit !

Don't look at how hard the picture you want to make is - again, take my example. When I did that portrait of the dude with the white face, I was literally copying a photo. Combine me being used to drawing cars and not people, to the level of detail, and the fact that I'd never done anything that good before... yet I managed. You can too. Don't limit yourself, 'just do it'. Also, helps if you're in a drawing mood. Occasionally I start a drawing, don't really feel like it much more half way through, and those ones never quite look as good when finished. When you really feel like it you can work wonders

Let me know how you get on with your bigger project, I'm curious to see

Well, thanks for your encouragement again! Here's a scrap I had for a very long time now unfinished. It will be one of my bigger projects as I want to colour it in fully digital, which I only did once before, so I'm quite unskilled. But I think I should just try, like you said.

Your link didn't work, it redirected me to my messages page

Still - yes, that's the way to do it Just have a go. I can't help you much with digital work as I hardly ever do anything like that, but if you feel the need for help you could always look up forums or ask other artists here on DA. The more you try, the better you'll get - and the advantager with digital work is if you're unhappy with one bit, you can just undo it and try again.

Good luck with it

Thanks very much

I'd been mezning to get those 5 clone wars drawings done for a very long time... I think this was the best looking of the 5 I did last week, though it did take some time !
