Another quick painting for you all. About 6 hours I'd say. Let me know what you think.

Painted in Photoshop
No photos, textures, or fractals.

You very much so deserve high praise and appeal. This not only made me change my wallpaper but also made me stare into the image. I lost myself in the gaze of an ocean themed nebula. I feel as if I am there and in this moment captured in the image. I can only nitpick one thing, it is very minor though! Some of the stars behind the nebula should be a bit more obscured. Such as the blue ones off to the right of the center. As I said before, it is a very, very minor flaw and hardly even brings down the beauty this image creates.

Thank you very much for your kind words. The stars on this are a little less than perfect. All the ones I've done after this I've really focused on adding depth to the star field.

First off, this piece certainly deserves the DD. The overall composition works great, the focus being about 1/3 from the right, and the colours are calm and serene. The stars look great, with realistic colours and a nice, not too random spread that still doesn't look deliberate. The nebula cloud itself looks awesome, the shape looks really natural and stands out well.

My only criticisms would be that the stars' visibility is not affected by the cloud, giving the impression that all the stars exist in a flat pane in front of the cloud. I would reduce the brightness of some stars where the nebula is, to give the impression that they're shining through a dense cloud of dust. This would perhaps improve the depth of the piece. Also, while the nebula cloud looks great, there isn't much going on around it, and I think some subtle variations of tone and colour (like in the bottom left, which looks great) would improve the piece. Using more purple-brown tones in the shadows of the nebula cloud might look good.

Overall though a stunning piece and definitely my new wallpaper. The technical skill and unity of composition really stood out for me, I would love to know if this nebula was 100% hand-painted or if some sort of fractal program was used as a base. Either way this piece is stunning. Awesome work!

Thank you so much for your critique. You made several good points about the stars. I dont know if you looked but I've done a few more after this where I really focused on getting depth to the stars. I think I've got that figured out, cause you're right, they do look flat in this image.

Yep, this 100% painted from a plain white document. I dont like using fractals and things like that. I feel like I'm cheating my self out of becoming a better artist.

Again thank you so much for this critique.

After posting the critique I had a flick through your gallery (should really have done that before critiquing..) and I definitely agree with you on the stars, your work is amazing. And the fact that you hand painted it is awesome - as a bit of an amateur in space art, I have to ask how do you do it? And how do you do your stars? It all looks so realistic.

And that's a good point on the fractals, I admit I use apophysis renders myself but I think that can sometimes be a bit limiting (once you have that shape it kind of puts you off changing stuff, even if it's for the better).

No problem, you thoroughly deserved the DD and you are now my new source of awesome wallpapers

This is phenomenal and whimsical. I don't know Photoshop that well so I can't fairly say anything about your technique. The color choice is interesting, I think of the ocean instead of space until I see the red giants dotting the lower left corner. This piece makes me feel so small but at the same time I feel like I could reach our and disperse the nebula like mist with a wave of my hand. The transition between the darkest corner bottom left could transition a bit more subtly into the light of the nebula. Unless that is how such space formations are for I have little knowledge on the subject and possibly no say in how the light ought to transition into darkness.

Fair critique, but look at some pictures of actual nebulae and you will find that this painting is extremely accurate, including the sudden transitions between light and shadow. The color choice is also quite normal for a picture of a nebulae, except that it is lacking the pink that is usually chosen to represent hydrogen gas in scientific images. I believe this is an artistic choice rather than a technical one though. Even in reality, the colors you see in professional pictures of space are artificial, since the photos are often taking in spectrums outside of visible light. In order for the data to mean anything to the human eye they have to choose colors to represent the things the telescope picks up that we can't see.

Here are some references from the Hubble Space Telescope's website: [link]

Keeping this in mind, I am EXTREMELY impressed with this painting. Great job! I really thought it was an actual picture, just as many of the other commenters did. I think the choice of colors is beautiful, but I may be biased because they're my favorites.

Yeah I probably should have looked at some reference pics before I critiqued. I just had to get to class but felt I had to say something about this picture that made my day.

This is an amazing piece that we legitimately didn't realise was a painting until we decided to look for the origin of this piece that inspired one of our own works- the slog through like, ten pages of pinterest and weheartit (despite saying to google "don't include this site, or this site") in three iterations of search terms (even despite using the image we saved years ago when we saw this in a photoset of nebula photos and our mind went "oh my gosh it looks like dragon I love it we should draw something based on it it's great" as Image Search basis) was worth finding this

(... and also makes me want to assassinate pinterest, and other reposters have made it so hard to find this origin point (and oh my g od that people edited out the signature that's... I'm made of fury and tired sadness at the whole thing))

Your works are all gorgeous and you have some real skills.

Anyway, thank you for creating this piece, and inspiring one of our own, even if the way we originally came across it wasn't the way it should have been.

This person even stole it on DA.

Just clicked on Darren Cowley's board on pinterest. Β There are other star trek pieces there using this as a background, with links to other sites. Β Β I left a comment on one saying the background was done by you.

Hunt for spaceships on pinterest and you will find your art cropping up as backgrounds. Β

Seen what appears to be this piece being used as a background for the Enterprise-D on pinterest. Β Below is a link to Cygnus-X.net. Β I clicked on it, and it goes to a set of Enterprise-D schematics, but with no sign of the art. Β
I've just gone back to pinterest and cannot find the pic. Β The only clue is that it was under Russian lettering.

Also saw same pice but with USS Voyager on it with Darren Cowley's name under it. Β You click on it and you go to his board.

I thought I'd let you know in case it's being used without your consent. Β

It is very elegant, and restrained. A lot of people would have thrown in a few celestial bodies to fill the space, and it looks better without.
