Its been rolled up in a tube for 3 years now so it probably doesnt look so fantastic right at this current moment ( too big for a sensible portfolio), but yeah, it looked sweet when it was all fresh and new .
collage is fun to add to traditional bits, it adds a lovely dose of texture

Alpha-gator! I get it! Heh, nice pun. He's like a creature of knowledge...with attitude!
I absolutely LOVE the watercolour-ed ness of this. It makes it feel really classy. Like, not garish and overwhelming the critter. I think the way you made leaves/grass out of an encyclopedia is genius, pure gold genius.
All the detail on his scales/fins is staggering too. Yay ink!
Great job!

Wow. This is very inventive. It reminds me of the children's books I read as a child, where there were puzzles on each page, and you had to piece things together. I also like the colouring -- appropriately hazy.

It looks like my cat! (Fugly cat...)
But this...since it is in fact not a cat, but rather a cool toothless reptile o' knowledge, is completely and totally all around fully a superb idea. He will bite with the pain of 1000 dictionary words and encyclopedic articles! Arr! (And that is a very scary thought, especially for them students. Nightmares... oh, the terror!)

this is so awsome. it reminds me of pokemon... but not to be insulting. its like the new version of pocket monsters where theyre like, cool style and serious. and they actually fight each other.

I'm not offended, pokemon has some really great creature designs. they just need to shake the goddamn kiddy feel because it adds nothing to the series

i'll keep my mind open til i get to play. I don't mind kiddyness when its in context, bright colours and solid shapes can be a great break from boring grey/brown palettes but the whole concept of pokemon is such a great one that its a shame people are put off by the fact that it had all that mass kiddy merchandising and the shitty anime.
I went to a couple of large battle events back when the games first came out, the atmosphere was great. its pretty exciting to see two top players battle it off then eventually have a winner declared. Very much a game you can have fun watching as well as playing XD.
would be great if they did an online version

I like the idea, but it's way too illustrative.
the pages out of the encyclopedia are a good idea, the letters on the scales, excellent.
I've got another idea for this one, but I don't want to rip it off so here it is:
just the head, seen from the side with the reeds behind it (pages), it's mouth wide open, each tooth bearing an alphabet letter, but the head is undefined and brutal, almost abstract. and ink wash fading to white underneath
THAT would be how to make it conceptual.

excellent show of creativity... and what other use would you think of an encyclopedia... you've turned it's boring existense into something truly to take notice of.
kudos on the DD!

Its part of my college work, we were given the title of 'leafing' which made me think of leafing through a book, and of layers of information like layers of scales on a fish or reptile

concept wise, none that i can think of. i'd used the pages as grass in a few earlier images and such. putting the letters on the scales seemed like a natural progression from that really xd
