Haven't had time to do the Mizutsune painting so here is a quick reference chart for some of the monsters in the game.Top name is the monster's actual name.
Italic name is an alternate name some one in my hunt group has called the monster at some point.
"quotes" are common/memorable exclamations when fighting the monsters.
So what other alternate names do people have for monsters?

That's partly why poison works well on Kirin. You can still do damage even if you're not hitting it much.

im still starting high rank and i remember taking on Akantor and being like, hell yeah, but when i went on to the Rajang tho..... i was fucked XD as soon as it went super saiyan i bailed on sub quest XD

The very first time our group hunted a Rajang back in Freedom Unite the quest lasted about 5 minutes. This is after we had been farming the Yamatsuki (massive elder dragon). Rajang are ridiculous.

XD I play solo.... so when i first met him.....damn, carted twice within seconds, and the quest lasted 5 minutes? as in you beat him in 5 or he beat you in 5 ;3

He beat us crazy fast. A trio of experienced hunters wiped out. Only one of us had actually fought him before.

Failing quests are annoying, you lose all the break rewards and only leave with the shinies you pick up XD

Failing a quest because you forgot to re-apply the paint ball and spend the next half hour trying to find the damned monster is even worse. Did that with a Lunastra once. Got revenge by killing a Qurupeco with a paintball though.
