- STORYLINE -

Description: The 1970s is remembered by most people as a bleak decade. The old guard in the USSR was back, two of the most powerful communist nations went to war, and the American decline was continuing... And so was the now unpopular war in Vietnam.

1970
On April 29th, the war in Vietnam would escalate further as the U.S. invades Cambodia to hunt out the Viet Cong; widespread, large antiwar protests occur in the U.S. Two days later, on the 1st of May, President Richard Nixon orders U.S. forces to cross into neutral Cambodia, threatening to widen the Vietnam War, and sparking protests across the United States. This would lead to the Kent State shootings 3 days later. And then, this would also lead to the Hard Hat Riots Aka Bloody Friday on May the 8th. Instead of condeming the violence, President Nixon would side to the workers side, and this would create a rift in American politics and society. Then, the Stonewall Pride riot. On the other side of the coin, the USSR has no problems such as this one. If anything, the only important news that comes out of Soviet Russia is that Venera 7 became the first spacecraft to land successfully on Venus and transmit data back to Earth.

1971
Nikita Khrushchev dies.

1972
President Nixon wins it's 2nd term as President of the US.

1973
While the Soviets continue their test programms, Chile's democratic left-wing government gets overthrown in a violent coup by Fascist General Augusto Pinochet.

1974
Watergate scandal revealed to the public. Nixon resigns. Gerald Ford takes his place.

1975
End of the Vietnam war with the Vietcong in control of the country. The war is over, and America is hurt.

1976
The USSR sends Military 'advisors' to Guatemala and the Honduras.

1977
Infiltrations of KGB (Ex-NKVD) agents in the CIA revealed in the US News.

1978
Jonestown incident: In Guyana, Jim Jones leads his Peoples Temple cult in a mass murder–suicide that claims 918 lives in all, 909 of them at Jonestown itself, including over 270 children. Congressman Leo J. Ryan is assassinated by members of Peoples Temple shortly beforehand. American morale is at it's most lowest by this point in time.

1979
The Iranian Revolution puts the Islamist hardliners led by the Alatollah Ruhollah Khomeinei in power. Meanwhile, with the questionable purges that where happening in the Socialist Republic Afghanistan by President Hafizullah Amin, the Soviet Union decides to take action. This marks the beginning of the Soviet-Afghan war. Even China went to war against it's former ally Vietnam for 3 weeks and 6 days.

As one war ended, another one began. And this is something that many point out as the actual beginning of the chain of events that would lead to the breaking point, many years later.
