I've been to the Commonwealth Memorial at el-Alamein to see almost the same neatly ordered mnemonics of once-was human beings who lived, loved, hated, were happy or sad, had desires and goals and dreams, too—but now even their names are disappeared because some few Big Ones decided that they are replaceable and worth to sacrifice for The Public Benefit.
El-Alamein is on the edge of the desert and the Mediterranean Sea, with blindingly white sand on the northern side of the road and pinkish yellow sand scattered with darker rocks on the southern side. There is an elegant cross there, too, and the silence of the desert. The whole thing is ruined by the noise of the nearby motorway and the view of distant high voltage wires. Despite these the place is timeless with no traces of humans. When you walk through a path a guard will appear and sweep your footprints completely. I think they don't want anybody to disturb the dead, and tell them that they died in vain because the world has barely got a better place.
Thank you for this picture.

Thank you for sharing this memory with me. I can imagine the place because of you detailed description. And what does people learn, not barley enough. Saw in TV that the Ukraine and Russia are on the way into one more unnecessary conflict….
