Description
At cold winter nights we all need something to warm our hearts and keep us safe from dangers outside. It was very difficult do make good picture out of this dagger because the blade reflects light like a mirror. A reward from hours of polishing. Blade is 20 cm long, about 5.5 mm thick and 5.4 cm wide. Its really razorsharp and pointy.
Handle is made from birch root (i am not 100% sure on this one) and is coloured with epoxy resin. Wood contained some flaves but it was hard to find a beautiful piece of wood of that size. Artist side in me need to say that it gives the piece its uniqueness and character
On the back of the handle theres silver dragon. I hope i can put it up soon. Screwup version can be seen on my site.

did you file and chisel that dragon into the center?

very litle filing - most of the work was done with drill, jewellersaw and dremmel.

wow. how do you do the blade like that? do you make it from scratch?

Ugrik In reply to migget159 [2008-12-25 18:58:20 +0000 UTC]
Yes. First i draw a number of scetches and then i start with raw materials - bar of g8 steel in this case.

This piece is absolutely amazing. It's like it came right out a book. The colour of the handle and the dragon carving give it a mistic quality, in my opinion. Congratulations

Ahh, you're the one with the gorgeous blades I've been seeing! Such incredible craftsmanship! I really love the grain of the handle against the shine of the blade! Wow!

Hehe - thank you! On this picture you actually see as less shine on the blade i was able to photograph - it was clear as mirror and i had about hour to get picture without blade reflecting surrounding surfaces

definitly your masterpiece! form of blade and handel match perfectly and the composition is from astonishing beauty
are creating your blades yourself or are you buyin some raw versions ?

Ugrik In reply to bobwannabe [2008-01-18 14:11:57 +0000 UTC]
well - i started with 300*60*6 mm piece of raw steel and 60*30*120mm piece of wood Only service i bought making this dagger was professional hardening because i don't have equipment for that in home. smaller blades i can harden myself but since this was doubleedged and relatively long i wanted to be certain that result is perfect.
I also use help of professional bronzecasters who use waxes i make to cast fittings i need

bobwannabe In reply to Ugrik [2008-01-18 15:58:50 +0000 UTC]
impresses me even more
if you can't harden them yourself what techniques are used to do so?
i thought some water or oil would be enough
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Ugrik In reply to bobwannabe [2008-01-18 16:35:38 +0000 UTC]
water and oil is usually enough allthugh some steels may need liquid nitrogen or CO2 to take extra edge out of them - in case of this dagger it was to difficult to heat it evenly - specially considering that its doublebladed. Other thing is the exact temperature where they heat the steel. In this case heating was made in 1m*1m*1m special oven which had temperature controll - i think temp was about 800 degrees celsius. All the smaller blades i can harden myself but swords and bigger pieces its better be done in best controlled environment

The blade is beautiful and the blade is amazing. It reminds me of tiger's eye. Best part of course is how perfectly they suit each other
