Description
The Imperial Class had been showing its age for some time, the Imperial II and its variants had done well but the lack of anti-fighter focus and having many of the same limitations of the Imperial I would lead to the Galactic Remnant seeking a simpler Star Destroyer to replace the venerable vessel as its primary capital ship in 12 ABY. Gilad Pellaeon would push for a smaller ship to make it easier for the lower quality crews of the Remnant to adapt to the ships faster and allow them to focus on their duties instead. Bilbringi, the last major shipyard of the Galactic Remnant would present the design and impress the warlords who were impressed with its simplicity, firepower, hangars, and shielding. The design, 1600 meters long and 650 meters wide with around a 1/3 of the height than the ISD made it cheaper and smaller than the ship it was to replace. Four powerful engines pushed it to 1050 KPH making it faster than the ISD which was already speedier than a good chunk of vessels. Furthermore the engines were capable of maneuvering the ship extremely well making it in theory capable of dodging larger turbolasers or ion cannons.
Furthermore, the two rear hangars could hold up to 65 TIE Aggressors and Punishers, larger TIE fighters with heavy weapons and shielding or 70 TIE Hunters and Scimitars. The weapons output, 6 triple fast firing but powerful turbolaser turrets, 12 broadside turbolasers, 10 ventral turbolasers, 24 ion cannons, 60 quad laser turrets, and 2 SPHAT style lasers powered by a single fusion reactor made it a truly formidable foe.
In the style of Treuton Teradrocs work on the Victory class ships, subclasses would be made with different roles ensuring the ships would not suffer being overengineered.
The Republic would dismiss this star destroyer as being a irrelevant foe but some officers and Intel grew worried as these ships were being joined by new frigates, corvettes, carriers and other small craft.
The ships would be trained up over 7 years before the Orinda campaign of 21 ABY.
The campaign was the Galactic Remnants push against New Republic forces which were infiltrating a neutral zone and turning planets in the zone against it while attacking their state with commando raids.
A fleet of 400 (275 Turbulents, 60 Whirlwinds (Carrier variants with the SPHAT cannons and reactor removed to include one extra hangar bringing the total to 200 craft), 45 Repulse (Tector style variants with two extra turbolaser turrets and another shield generator added at the expense of hangar space), and 20 Wolf (Interdictor variants with 1/2 the firepower but extra shield generators) would cross the border and seize the neutral zone supported by ISD, Victory class and variants, plus a host of other smaller craft numbering in the tens of thousands under Admiral Gilad Pellaeon in the refurbished flagship Reaper, now converted into a true warship.
The Republic would summon it's newest and shiniest warships including Starhawks, MC90s, MC85s, E-Wings, Majestic Cruisers, Republic Star Destroyers, and the Viscount. A 38km monstrosity of a Dreadnought meant to destroy fleets of Star Destroyers and Executor class ships.
Admiral Alyla Lowsyk, despite her own misgivings on the assault due to knowing Paelleon wasn't the typical idiot Imperial, would attack nearly 3 months later under significant political pressure to keep the war cheap and easy with a single victory. She would proceed to mop up most world's with no resistance from garrison forces. At Orinda though, the Reaper and fleet waited for the NR task force with heavy support from orbital and ground platforms.
Admiral Lowsyk would proceed to charge headfirst into the formation using the Viscount shields to absorb Imperial fire and protect the weaker vessels until they were in range. Once the fleet was engaged, the Viscount would engage Reaper.
As Viscount and Reaper blasted away, 20 Dominator and 20 Wolf Class Interdictors arrived and activated their generators. Admiral Lowsyk was soon horrified to discover the reason as three Megador Class Star Dreadnoughts arrived.
The Battle of Orinda, which had started so well would see the greatest mass retreat by the New Republic since it's founding. Happily for the New Republic, the Dominators were poorly protected and several corvettes and fighters managed to destroy them allowing a corridor of escape.
In return for the Reaper requiring 9 days of repair, 256 smaller craft, 876 fighters, 24 Turbulents, 8 Dominators and 3 Star Destroyers, Admiral Pellaeons fleet would claim 18 StarHawks, 12 Majestics, 45 Republics, capture an old MC80, 8 MC40s, 956 Fighters, 324 smaller craft and Viscount would be severely damaged requiring 11 months o repair.
The Turbulent would continue service and perform above expectations until the peace accords recognizing the Galactic Remnant as a state.
Afterwards, the Remnant admiralty would scrap it's old Victorys, Victory subclasses, Star Destroyers, Venators, and CIS ships and replace them with Turbulents and subclasses which brought the total number of the Star destroyer by the First Order invasion to 21,000.
The First Order, like the Republic, had dismissed the Star Destroyers as being inferior. The falsehood of this statement was proven when the Turbulent Bloodfin engaged the Resurgent called Triumph over the Remnant world of Muunlist.
The two hour fight would see the experienced captain's and crews wore each other down. The Resurgents shields fell for a second allowing for the SPHAT style cannon to fire blowing apart portions of the opponent.
The Resurgent blew apart under a renewed rain of fire.
The First Order, whose weapons were Khyber enhanced, came to the harsh realization that it's fetish for more powerful weapons had come at the expense of sensors and effective shielding tech meaning the Resurgent was about equal to the cheaper Turbulent.
Post Exegol, the Turbulent continues to serve, a mighty threat to all but the strongest warships.
