Description EDIT: For those of you who do not have a paid subscription on DA, I have made the stamp into a plz!

Because without -all- of you, the stamp's message would fall on deaf ears.

Also, I've modified that stamp a little, taking away its drop-shadow and changing the typography so hopefully, though its just words is a little more appealing to look at now.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Never thought I'd ever make one of these, but lately been wanting to make several little stamps.

Anyone is welcome to use it. You don't have to but it would be nice to hear from you if you do wind up using it.

It is a simple one, no fancy images just a simple statement of which I think some people need reminding :3

Art is subjective, just because you don't like something, doesn't mean it is not art. Reversely, if you like it it does not mean that it is. What defines art for one person is completely different for the next.

I could speak on this subject in far more depth, but I don't think I need to. It's been said before me and I am sure it will be a topic of some debate long into the future, as long as people have opinions. :3

Yeah. Just because this website is called DeviantART, doesn't mean that everything has to be art on here.

The art we produce is no different from our other actions as a mean of self-expression. Thus, if we can say "I do good" while actually doing wrong, we can also give a wrong message through our art, and thus there's, by all likelihood, always someone out there better able to analyse and tell what our artwork actually means, represents and tells about us as the artist. Whoever that someone is or however we could tell that (they're right) is a whole another topic. The point is, that artists are still just human beings, so they can't decide what is the right way to interpret anything, not even their own actions. No, they can only tell what they're supposed to mean, but if they've failed to express just that, then they've failed and that's that!

Oh wait, you're talking about the definition of art and not its meaning? Well, in that case you're absolutely right! I just wanted to make sure, that the stated point is understood here.

You're right that art is a type of self-expression. But that means that by creating a piece of art, the artist is trying to express some idea; in other words, they create a piece with a certain meaning in mind. That's what it means to the artist, regardless of how other people interpret it. Art can be viewed from many different perspectives, and rarely means the same thing to different people.Β

There's no such thing as a "wrong message". The only way one's interpretation of a piece of art could be incorrect is if they apply it to something tangible and disprovable (ie: this art means that concrete is made of fish). What a piece of art "actually means" is entirely subjective. Even if it's a sort of Freudian slip on part of the artist, it still means something to them separate from that. Even if they're the only person that sees it in the way they intended, it still carries that meaning (for them).Β

Note that our understandings of motifs, symbols, and words are learned-- it's not difficult for them to mean different things to different people, and no one interpretation is the "right one". The only potential failure would be of the artist being unable to transmit that meaning to other people. Which, in the case of more avant-garde art forms, is not even always intended. And that's a message in itself.

Originally I thought, that "what me make of it" referred to its message, but what you said makes more sense. Art is artist's personal message expressed in a personal way, regardless how it may be interpreted. That is, by sense, what they're making of it.

Art is entirely subjective? Assuming there's anything absolute, I find it hard to believe, that such an intentional expression could be only viewed subjectively.Β It'd then be only a matter of considering all the factors and make a far judgment. It may be impossible for us humans, but there are many other things within our reality, that surpasses our capabilities to do just that.

I have to agree, Β there are certain cases in which that's happened to me. Β  Like I do lists of my favorite things but yet some people do not think that they belong in my gallery and rather should just be a personal thing, Β which I personally disagree with because well...i'm stating my opinions on things I like and don't like and we are all entitled to opinions in one form or anything, Β  I respect this person/user and all but sometimes there are just certain times where I disagree with them. Β  Everyone likes and dislikes different things.

I always find that true. It doesn't matter if your art is very simple because you don't know how to pose. Or you're an anime expert. Art is Art. No matter how simple. In fact. I'm actually the former who usually draws simple things and draw people without fingers or a nose. I just find that way of my art "cute"

I could go and explain art's original existence and how its actually a trade not something people do as simple as breathing, and that it is a skill that is desired and honed, not a "gift" but meh... xD

that would take an awful long time, buuut people are allowed their opinions over cold hard historical fact and proof anyday apparently
