Description In those dark nights while the fog crept through the empty alleyways of the city Rivén used to think about the stories his mother had told him when he was still a child.
The stories about the Elven Lords, residing in their cities of white stone and silver, having the wisdom of millennia. He had dreamed about wandering through those fabled cities one day but when he said that his mother just smiled. A sad smile.
"You will surely see those cities one day.", she used to say.
She had lied to him. Rivén knew that now. Those days were long gone and the Elven Lords were no more, nor their glorious cities.
The Elves had moved to the cities of the humans, living their live in peasanthood or worse. Nobody cared about their former greatness anymore. They were a pleasant sight and good workers. Nothing more.
Rivén looked down the deserted alley. The shadows seemed to gather around the single light of the streetlamp, with moths trying to fly into the alluring flame. Some days ago one of the elven hustlers had gone missing, his body turning up in the river.
Rivén was afraid but he needed the money or else he would lose that filthy room he called his home. The fog grew denser while he waited for a customer to come...

~~~
Inspired by Dragon Age Origin's portrait of the Elves and by the awesome novel I'm just reading. "Der Elben Schlächter" which is something like "The Elven Slaughterer" in English. A German Dark Fantasy/Thriller novel about a murderer who killes Elven hustlers and drains them of all their blood.
Please tell me what you think ^^
Beautiful, haunting image. You can feel his sadness and despair.
The description of the book you're reading makes me wish I could speak/read German. It sounds like something I would absolutely love to read.
Thank you so much That was exactly what I was going for
It is amazing, it's rather dark and has an ironic twist, a totally different approach on the usual fantasy characters. Didn't read anything like it before. The main characters are a sage, master Hippolit, who is very old but got turned into a 14yo in a rejuvenation ritual gone wrong and his partner, a troll, Jorge, without the slightest bit of manners *lol* It has motifs of the Jack the Ripper myth and a huge bit of Holmes/Watson with the surreal ideas of Discworld. The authors are both German but maybe the story will be translated one day. ^^
Wow...now, I really do want to read that book. Time to learn German, might be easier than waiting for it to be translated. Anyway, since I homeschool my kids and they have to learn a foreign language, it might as well be one I want to learn.
Your poor kids 'cause German is a pretty difficult language, at least I've been told so, hell, even many Germans don't speak it correctly *lol*
A sad story
I don't understand it, but I want to know more. That would be an interesting book then, such a pity they don't have many German books here
Very beautiful render!!! It really gives the feeling of a "dark place". As always you're good at capturing feelings in a render His expression looks subtile but that makes it exactly like it should be. I didn't see it at first glance, but I saw it only when I looked in more detail. If I were in his situation I wouldn't go around screaming and crying either Also I think the pose fits in really well. I think I don't have to say why
God, took me long to get back to this one
What do you not understand about the story? ^^ I made it up while writing the comment so there isn't much more to it than what is there *lol*
Thanks for the compliment with the capturing of feelings, this is very important to me ^^ btw: I wouldn't
be able to be so seemingly calm in this situation, too, I would have already been running away totally freaked out XD
You have reason to be. Pulling off dim night lighting that still shows the character can be a real challenge...
Night light is the worst! I postworked this a lot afterwards, actually the pic was even a bit too bright. Thank God for postwork programs *lol*
I don't do an awful lot of postwork--primarily because I'm not very good at it. My jaw just crashes into the ground when I see some of the artwork that gets done here using a mouse or pad! As I've told other people, I can't draw a stick man.
Oh, well. I have fun with what I can do, and that's all that counts...
You're right, as long as you have fun with what you do all is right
I didn' do much postwork either but I started it some time ago and I'm slowly improving. Corel Painter 4 helps getting gorgeous results out of simple renders, just like this pic. There's a lot of Corel Painter 4 magic here
I'm using the mouse too and that is shit. You can only go so far without a pad. That's gonna be my next big investment I think.
No more toys for me for a while, I'm afraid. I pretty much blew my 'expendable' mattress money the other day buying a dedicated external laptop drive so I can put all of my content in one place without cluttering up the main 'c' drive on the new laptop.
As for Corel, it's actually the folks from Paint Shop Pro who have resurrected that program from the ashes. JASC (PSP's parent) had the programmers. Corel had the marketing and sales people with a shitty product.
PSP used to be cheap. That's why I loved it. Corel has nothing to do with cheap.
I guess one of these days soon I'll have to unzip and load GIMP and see how hard it will be to use. Friends on another forum seem to love it, and the price is right, since it's a developmental training thing, I guess. It's free, and supposedly state-of-the art. I just haven't had the ambition or time to bang heads with yet another new difficult program when PSP handles most of my needs...
Anyway...another day in the river, working on the dock. Hopefully the last one for a while!
