Write-up
(Note: This takes place in her past life)
After discovering that the chaotic force that had been sealed within the core of her planet had escaped, Sailor Core deduced that it would have possessed someone in a position of power – a noble or royalty – as it had done in the past. However, she knew that she could not just break into their houses and accuse them of being the new host of the chaotic force. Instead, she waited until the royal family held a ball so all royalty and nobility would be gathered in one place.
Sailor Core knew that she would have to sneak in with the crowd, but she did not own anything that would allow her to do such a thing. Not having enough money to buy a beautiful dress, she painstakingly designed and made her own. It was a dress of simple elegance. Hopefully it would allow her to blend in with the crowd so she could complete her investigation in secrecy.
Infiltrating the castle was simple enough, but it was not long until someone noticed her. To her surprise, it was the prince, but there was something odd about him. Something about him seemed to draw her in, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that he had sinister intentions.
Close to midnight, the prince said he knew something that nobody should have known, that he knew that the girl he was dancing with was Sailor Core and not a noblewoman.
“Everything is happening just as I had planned, Sailor Core,” the prince said with a sinister smile spreading across his face.
“What do you mean? How do you know who I am?” she asked in a panic.
The prince laughed. “Did you honestly believe that I wouldn’t know who you were? You sealed me away into the heart of this planet all those millennia ago. You look a lot different from when I last saw you, and you aren’t as powerful this time.”
She had to act now. Sailor Core was about to transform to fight and seal away the chaotic force, but she felt the prince’s hand painfully squeeze her wrist.
“Now, now, I can’t have you doing that again.” He placed his index finger on her chest, right over her heart. He leaned in closer. “You’ll want a lot more power. You can’t hope to defeat me like this,” he whispered into her ear. “But, if you want to defeat me so badly, why don’t you take some of my power?”
About the Art
I am very proud of myself this round. I don't think I've ever done a watercolour as good as this before. I'm glad I bought that light table now, it makes everything so much cleaner. I don't have to worry about pencil lines or it becoming muddy because of the graphite.
A few little explanations:
The hyacinth in the background: In floriography, the meaning of the purple hyacinth is "I am sorry. Please forgive me. Sorrow." - All of which apply to this character.
La Triste: French for "The Sorrowful"
The rune: Her planetary symbol - Hagalaz
I went for an art nouveau style this round. I do love Mucha's style and tried to replicate it a little.
The story is supposed to be just before her decent into corruption. I hope you can pick that up. I just couldn't think of any other reason why Sailor Core would wear such a fancy dress (apart from the senior formal/prom).
Also, I've decided to redesign her a little. I thought that the magenta and yellow colour scheme wasn't really working. I was trying to keep away from purple (I didn't want to copy Sailor Saturn), but it is a colour that fits, both with her personality and her element. Her other colour will be grey.
I believe that this art piece is a little overdue for the competition. Personally, I blame my own disorganisation and the fact that everything seems to be going wrong for me at the moment. (Mega loads of homework, the printer playing up, getting sick, etc.) I can't wait until next week, though. I'm going to Queensland for a holiday - for the first time ever!

I like the whole design of this; not just your character but the background as well. It looks almost like a playing card or something. In a good way though. And her facial expression fits the "triste" theme very well.
What reference did you use to find the rune you use for her symbol? I'm trying to come up with a symbol for my own otaku senshi and was thinking of looking into runes.

Thanks.
I based the picture on Mucha's art nouveau style, but I guess it does sort of look like a playing card.
I think this is the website I used to find her symbol: [link]
I hope it helps.
