I have no idea now how this image came about. It is in part a gift for an acquaintance who worked on Legend of Korra, the nuts and bolts production end rather than the creative part.

I think that Satsuki and Mei from Totoro reminds me a bit of the relationship between Aang and Katara during the first part. While Aang may have been making moon-eyes at Katara literally from the first episode, she was busy with the maternal or at least older sister role (pretty much with everyone including Appa) She was two years older than Aang and originally taller, while Aang was celebrating his freedom from strict training and generally acting well below his true age.

Yeah, Appa should have been at least half again bigger. It just didn’t work.
