Behind The Scenes, the surprising story of Francesca Sylvia

Some of you might remember, Hanging Around, the show about Jess, a girl with transformation syndrome, where she would turn into a pink dress.  Every week her condition would cause some type of hijinx, that the characters would have to work out by the end of the episode.  In one episode she took advantage of being a dress to spy on her forever oblivious love interest, while in another she got lost at the mall and was almost bought by the stuck-up cheerleader.  Not only was the show entertaining, but it did an important job of introducing people to the challenges faced by those with transformation syndrome.

What you probably don't know is that Francesca Sylvia the actress who played Jess actually had transformation syndrome herself.  In fact, the dress on the show was modeled after the very dress she would turn into.  Several of the transformation scenes were actually really her transforming.

Francesca was a very dedicated actress, and started to avoid taking her medication, despite the very real risks.  She not only wanted to be able to do as many of the transformation and dress scenes herself as possible, but she also felt like the increased number and length of her transformation incidents helped her identify more closely with the character she was playing, She went so far as to ask that while she was transformed if she could be stored with the other mundane copies of the dress in the costume department in between scenes, a post-it note stuck to her bodice to remind the crew which one she was when it came time to fetch her.

Eventually the inevitable happened and she failed to change back after one of her transformations.  Additionally, a mix-up in the wardrobe department ended up with her auctioned off with the rest of the props from the series.

While we might not know where she is now, Francesca did a wonderful and important job, bringing much-needed attention to a small community, and giving all of us a smile every time we turned on the TV.

After talking with Ferrocksyll the subject of ThatGuyInThatCorner 's old lost captions came up, and with Ferrockyll's encouragement and ThatGuyInThatCorner's approval, I did my best to recreate this one from memory.  It isn't a perfect copy, but I tried to get the spirit of the the original caption.  It was a favorite of mine, and while this isn't the original, I hope you can all enjoy it too.

Of course a huge amount of credit goes to ThatGuyInThatCorner for creating the original caption.   He was one of my original inspirations for writing TF stories.  If you haven't checked him out yet, make sure you try out his Deco's Department Store stories and A Duo of Transformation Tales.

Other credit goes to Ferrocksyll, not only for the encouragement, but also with finding and preparing the perfect image, and for helping me make the caption significantly better.  If you haven't looked at her stuff, she is one of the best and most prolific inanimate TF caption writers currently making content.  She's definitely worth checking out (though she's not always PG in her content.)

Finally, if any of you have any captions saved from ThatGuyInThatCorner's old captions please let us know, most were lost and we would love to be able to see them again.
