One fateful day in summer, I reached a point where I had to make a decision. Lilly and Lizzy had shared an invite to a pool party with me, and I had arrived early to see them. However, when I got there I only spotted Cara sitting by the pool in a two piece black swimsuit.

Seeing me she waved me over and welcomed me, “Hey, it’s good to see you. I didn’t know you were coming, but I’m glad you’re here.”

“Thanks,” I answered, “It’s good to see you too. I was actually invited by Lilly and Lizzy. Have they arrived yet?”

“Oh, they’re right here!” Cara beamed.

“Wait,” I said, my stomach dropping, “You don’t mean.”

“Yep,” Cara replied, gesturing to her swimsuit. “They both love the water, they’re great swimmers, and they are a perfect matching pair. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner.”

“They, they look good on you,” I stammered, not knowing what to say. I knew she had transformed many friends into clothes, but this was the first time it had been one of my friends.

“Don’t they!? And they fit great too. I’m in love with the way they feel,” Cara went on, plainly enjoying the way the twins fit her.

Seeing her there delighting in her new swimsuit, I realized I had to ask her something. “Cara, I need to know, are you going to transform me?”

“Hmmm,” Cara looked up from where she had been running her hands over her swimsuit, and met my eyes, then looked thoughtful. “It depends. If I figure out what you should be, then probably, but I don’t figure that out with everyone. You don’t need to worry though. If I do, you’ll turn out great and I’ll take really good care of you.”

That was it. I must have known this choice was coming for a long time, but now I couldn’t hide from it. I’d either have to cut ties with Cara or accept that I might be joining her wardrobe permanently. All this time I’d been uneasy about her, and her strange behavior, but I also couldn’t imagine no longer seeing her smiling face or hearing her kind and welcoming voice.

Seeing my worry, Cara put a hand on my shoulder. “Hey, it’s a beautiful day and the water looks amazing. Why don’t you join me in the pool? I need to get this swimsuit in the water.”

Sighing, I smiled and followed her into the pool. Lilly and Lizzy had been right, if you were going to be friends with Cara, it was just something you had to get used to.
