For what it's worth, I think he looks better without the zipper. I'm not sure whether you were going for this particular look or not, but the zipper is sort of suggestive when the tab is on the bottom as it is in the older drawing.
Maybe put zippers on his arms or back if you want to have that sort of artificial look to him.
