Description Failed Science

Well, I have a new laptop and a new OS version with it, that's double trauma. A touchpad from hell, the keys are all in the wrong place and GIMP and other stuff doesn't behave like it used to. Some day the world of information technology will come to the shocking insight that the best progress sometimes is to just leaving things the way they are. Until then we suffer. Sort of.

I love this! H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society did some radio dramas in the late '90s (trying to emulate that midcentury OTR vibe). My friend gave me a bunch of them on cd and he created a "Miskatonic University -- Classified" manilla envelope with "newspaper clippings" from the "actual events" related in the Lovecraft stories (now radio plays). Anyway, the pictures were very "Discordian," and I'm sure you know what I mean. This could have been one of them. Well done! (Also, sorry to ramble at you.)

I know nothing about Lovecraft to be honest, other than that he existed, once. A a teen I used to read Asimov & stuff as a viable alternative to doing my homework, but those stories paint a different kind of picture, more colorful than this one. I do think I know what you mean though, I liked how this came out myself, it reminded me of the boundless optimism people felt with regard to science & technology in the 1950s and 60s, completely aware of the sense of disillusion that was already present inside that optimism. Setting ones expectations too high is always a guarantee for at least a sense of defeat. Thanks

It's very articulate capture. Asimov is totally an alternative to studying. Thanks for making this piece. It's very prescient.

Nostalgia For What Never Was (as in: missing something you never had) ??

oh i suffered from that when i got my new laptop with windows 8   all my life got complicated all of a sudden. since that day i hate -ferociously- number 8

i also disliked some details in photoshop 6 but that was easier , i went easily back to photoshop 5 and all was back to normal smoothly.

I'm slowly coming to peace with the keyboard and touchpad at least - motor skills, eh? The light-touch keyboard is actually amazing. I did actually had to run windows (8, indeed) just to download an Ubuntu/Linux installation file. Really, what an absolute FRAUD of an operating system, not just w8 but windows in general. Sloooooowwwwwww, even at the first run. And from ancient experiences I know that windows gets progressively even sssllllooowwweeerrrr and sssslllllloooooowwwweeeeerrrrrrrrrr over time. And their whole "computing made easy for grannies and (other) imbeciles" approach, urrghhh. I really do pity the 90% of humanity who are stuck with that piece crap.

Also: have you noticed that dA is (very) often incredibly slower if accessible at all when the majority of the US are asleep? As if they throttle down the whole thing at (their) night just to save money (sometimes there's a "system in maintenance" message but that's a different issue and an understandable one). Apparently we, the rest of the planet, don't really matter that much to these people. Statistics probably tell them that we don't hit the ad banners often enough

How are things in (The) Lebanon?

i never used anything but windows my whole life, so i can't compare
oh i do have an iPad but it's different, no?
but i can say it is slow, yes, i am all the time waiting!

i neverr noticed the US asleep thing maybe because i don't sleep in regular hours myself. i mean i mostly sleep with the americans

well, things here are mostly the same, quite horrible... no electricity lately, cuts almost 10 to 14 hours a day. don't feel it much when i'm at home (generator) but i've been in beirut for a week now (no generator) so i'm quite frustrated.
and then those Nasra/Daeesh thing (IS) are threatening to come to Lebanon if Hezbollah don't stop helping Syria (how lovely expectation) we live in the fear -not at all theroretical- of having our throats literally cut at any moment now.  and then there is the fact that here are now 1 million syrian refugges in Lebanon, when there are 4.5 population in lebanon. do the math and see how much fun we are having

lebanon is ... well, still alive.

Don't worry, "we" have shipped half a dozen of F16s of to Jordan (I believe) to bomb IS to hell for you. Or only make matters worse, possibly, nobody really knows. I any case, now "we" are valid IS targets too, and there are sufficient "Islamic fundamentalist" idiots walking around here in NL to cause some havoc. I have to say I'm a bit frightened about it all, not because of the statistically infinitesimal chance of getting killed in an attack myself, but because any "action" over here from the part of our Muslim brethren will push an even larger part of the population into the claws of the far right. Polls are already showing our local Hamas (the anti-EU/anti-Islamic/anti-cultural "Freedom Party" led by this self-hating clown en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geert_Wi… ) as the largest political party thanks to the IS "PR". Not a happy prospect, having those thugs seize power. Ah, right now there's a local jihadi dimwit on TV, the other extreme.. Extremes justify each other's existence, that's the state the world is in a the moment. Yes, tragic, and yes, you're still a lot closer to the fire than I am. Over here the evil don't slice other people's throats, they build camps instead, it's a more stealthy process because building camps and training camp commanders and ordering cremation ovens and other "infrastructure" takes time and lots of investments. We are a more calculating breed..

Ah yes, karaba mafeesh, I remember that from Egypt. Sorry that I'm not cheering you up btw

to be true, the last thing i want now is someone trying to cheer me up. i have some killing instincts right now, not good to turn them on him.

well i get what you're saying, they feed each other. now it's going to be more and more difficult to argue with people like him. honestly, tell me, what can you say to a racist these days? what counter-argumentation can you present to him?
and you know what? if i was him, i'd be a racist too. maybe i'd be a racist because i have too much empathy. i try to put myself in "your" place, and i wonder what would it be like.
not that i'm confusing things. i hate extremists and fundamentalists of ANY kind.
but this... this is too much for me. i'm traumatized.

You should really learn Russian and study this web site in detail: lurkmore.to . It's very healing! In fact I suspect it's the coolest place on the internets at the moment. You can at least enjoy the pictures on this page to form an impression: lurkmore.to/%D0%A1%D0%A8%D0%90 . Though their "reviews" of Russia itself are a lot more insulting and offensive. They have been accused of "undermining the human dignity of the Russian people and the Orthodox Church". I mean, how good can it get..
