I've played it, and it's fine, I'm just partial to the system I was raised on.

after reading some comments, I wanna say that I LIKE D&D 4.0 I also like v3.5... I guess I like 3.0 too, I don't really remember much of it and I really have no opinion on 2.0 cuz I've only played it a few times. Β I've only played D&D so far, I really want to try Vampire: The Masquerade but no one I know plays it D: and I'm gonna try Marvel and Shadowrun in Sept at a con

I meant no harm, I played 3 and 3.5, to me lacks character personalization

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

underbust In reply to Fenris82 [2013-08-08 01:05:25 +0000 UTC]

I've played Advanced, second, third, three point five, pathfinder, fourth, modern d20, Starwars D20, BESM, Shadowrun, WoD, Mutants and Masterminds, GURPS and Call of Cthulu. I've probably played more than this, but they wouldn't of been for more than a session or two.Β

To me, fourth means that you have to make the character and personalisation. If you want, you can leave your character the somewhat plain way the character sheet builds it... But that's just being a poor roleplayer. You can make what you want out of it. It's UP TO YOU. It is designed SPECIFICALLY so that you can make it how you want to with flavour text. There is no way to account for every person's wants in character design... So they tried to make it in such a way that players do it themselves... But players were all too weirdly bent into the 3.5 shape of "ONE BILLION CLASSES THAT ARE ONLY USEFUL FOR ONE SPECIFIC SCENARIO!"... So they were too thick to figure it out, even with WOTC screaming it at them.Β

You can hate it all you want. I don't give a flying fuck if you do...Β

But why on earth inform someone who obviously likes it, that you don't? Do you enjoy walking up to strangers in the street wearing the shirts of bands that you don't like, and informing them that you don't like the band?Β

Don't reply. It was rhetorical.Β

Hey, my view is that a a good role-playing system is one that lets the player make basic decisions like whether they want their character to be a spell-slinger (and what type of spells if they do), a tank or a stealth-em-up or whatever, and then concentrates letting them create a character with a skillset. I've been know to allow players to take, say best 6 of 7 rolls of 3D6 for stats and arrange those to suit what basic class they want to play.

Actually I have M&M 2E. Haven't looked in a long time but, yes, I recall much of it looked *really* good. But there were a couple of things that bugged me.

1) Magic seemed too powerful (Or I didn't read it right!)
2) Is that the one without Hit Points?

Marvel going really well by the way...

Very true.

We did a couple of 4E modules and our DM was very good, so I enjoyed it, but decided it just wasn't for me long term.

Wasn't having a dig.

Also, having just bought the 3.5 books about four months before the announcement of 4E was a *bit* annoying!

Not that I hold that against them. Much...

You were having a dig, but that is totally fine. teasing those within our own subculture is part of what makes it such a good one. We get to get all geek pride about our favourite things. In a heroic defensive way. This is why we enjoy the "goku vs superman" type debates.

underbust In reply to Lyingbastard [2012-12-13 08:38:33 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I wouldn't of even moved on to fourth from 3.5 were it not for me not owning any of the books, so starting a Fourth Ed collection was easier than chipping away at 3.5 for the rest of eternity.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lyingbastard In reply to underbust [2012-12-13 09:14:13 +0000 UTC]

Heh, fair enough. Have you tried Pathfinder (which is a streamlined version of 3.5)? I'm a bit biased because I freelance for Pathfinder third-party publishers.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

underbust In reply to Lyingbastard [2012-12-13 09:22:30 +0000 UTC]

No.
The only reason I have not is because I stopped playing with my old group juuuuust as Pathfinder was released, and I didn't play till I started DMing here and went with 4.0.

I have heard great things about pathfinder. I don't have edition loyalty to 4.0 or anything, but I also have no issues with it, so see no reason to move over.

What do you do for pathfinder? That's a really cool job.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lyingbastard In reply to underbust [2012-12-14 05:45:16 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry, I won't start an edition war. I don't work for Paizo, I work freelance (well, also technically lead of Pathfinder development) for 4 Winds Fantasy Gaming. We make supplements that are Pathfinder compatible (splatbooks, GM's helpers, cards, etc) to give gamers and GMs more options, under the Pathfinder Compatibility License and OGL.

Lyingbastard In reply to underbust [2012-12-18 16:37:25 +0000 UTC]

Of course, as you well know rule #1 with any game is: does your group want to play it? Especially when it's not easy to find new players.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

underbust In reply to Lyingbastard [2012-12-19 01:14:43 +0000 UTC]

With 4.0, it was insisted that I play 4.0. I wanted to get pathfinder books, but everything aspired for me to give 4.0 a go and I've never regretted that decision. Our little group is about to lose half of it's members though, as it's the military and PCS season is upon us. So we're going to have to look for new players with the 4.0 banner above us, which is hard if you want experienced people to join the table, they all seem to hate the system for some stupid reason of pride and having no idea past the core rule books what the system is about. *sigh*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lyingbastard In reply to underbust [2012-12-19 04:39:24 +0000 UTC]

Is it an option for someone else to GM and run a different system, and just put the campaign on hold for now? I'm guessing it isn't from the sound of it. The most important thing is if you've enjoyed it. If you like playing it, then the game is good enough.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1
