Breathing isn't hindered in a corset. It doesn't really effect your ribs or lungs that much. 

If you know a friend who has trouble breathing in a corset, it's probably because they have minor claustrophobia. Think about how uncomfortable a shirt can be if it's too close to your throat. It's the same thing. More of a fear of the tightness rather than the actual restriction of the breathing. 

Now MOVIES will claim it's the corset, but that's because they are either cinched into a corset that doesn't fit, or because movies like tropes and often just perpetuate lies. Because movies suck at reality.

actually this is based on seeing the extreme people who use waist cincher things for that perfect wasp waist look and, that it pushes organs out of place compressing other organs. doesn't have to compress ribs and such but compressing the body does make the stuff inside move around.
