When she reached the skill set of a Sorcerer, the disparities between Koben and Miras had brought the Illodhros family to the epiphany that, in order for their lineage to continue strongly, they would have to brace for war eventually. Without warning or explanation, from that point onward Esther had to face her father in combat every day as he believed in practical lessons. However the girl was pacifistic in nature and couldn't bring herself to using her powers offensively, especially not turning them against her father. Illodhros senior however was less gentle and struck Esther brutally with his wizard spells to the point of mortal injuries when she wouldn't fight back. He withdrew from her life entirely and reduced their interaction to these duels only.

This mixture of mental and physical torture inspired the strong desire in Esther to learn to fend off magic.

From the extensive libraries she had access to in Illodhros manor, Esther secretly schooled herself in what she found out to be the profession of a Sage and began tattooing herself with few protective runes hidden below her clothes. After the Song-Lu peace talk disaster however, Esther quickly ceased her travels in fear of being involved at the fronts and retreated to the far east , as far away from the war as possible. Despite having no great capabilities in countering Stitches fighting style that relied in no way on using magic, she managed to fend him off and saving the duke by setting her own shop on fire, buying time to flee from the assassin. Since then she lives in Cassairs fortified mansion.

When Miras attacked Song Lu and Koben, Esther fought at the front, assigned to Cathal's ( fav.me/d8g96b1 ) infantry squad. Together they encountered the poison for the first time and retreated in fear, bonding over the experience. Esther is deeply afraid of the poison and while she would love to use it on her enemies she is aware of the uncontrollability of a bioweapon and afraid for the life of her allied kin. She is in a conflict with her master Cassair over whether or not to use it and is distraught at his readiness to risk her and many others life by using the adabrene poison.
