I've decided to release the sprite sheet I used to come up with the concept of the Floatzel the Sea Captain sprite. This shows how the design changed over time, and the different ideas for the design I had.The top two on the left are the base sprites for Floatzel in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. The top right is the very first sprite I came up with. The hat was literally a pixel art captain's hat found on Google Images.
Bottom left is me experimenting with giving Floatzel a five-o-clock shadow, a feature I kept in the final sprite.
The middle sprite on the bottom was an experiment to give Floatzel a more muscular body. I wanted Floatzel the sea captain to be kind of muscular from all his experience at sea, but I think it's a little bit overdone here. I didn't keep that design in the final sprite.
Bottom right is the semi-final design for the sprite, just missing his five-o-clock shadow. I gave the captain a pipe, since sea captains are often seen with pipes in cartoons and artworks featuring sea captains, so I figured it would only be fitting that Floatzel had one as well.
