Title: Fossilized Crustacean
Medium: Digital Photography
Photographer: Aaron J. Greenblatt
Camera Type: Panasonic DMC-LZ7 Lumix 7.2 MP
Editing: Edited in PhotoShop 7.0 for color accuracy, size, and to apply copyright and border.

Location: Photograph taken at the 2008 Southeastern Michigan Gem and Mineral Show at the Southgate Civic Center in Southgate, Michigan. Show hosted by the Midwest Mineralogical & Lapidary Society .

Description: This is a fossilized crustacean. From the looks of it, probably a shrimp. This one is way past its freshness date however, as it's several million years old. This fossil was sitting on a dealer's table and was for sale for $200. Yes, $200 for one shrimp! And you thought that today's prices for shrimp were steep! Apparently if you let one sit around long enough, you can sell it for a lot of money.

There were numerous fossils like this crustacean for sale at the show. This fossil in particular was found in Germany. To be more precise, it was found in Germany's Solnhofen limestone - a Jurassic Konservat-Lagerstätte that preserves a rare assemblage of fossilized organisms.

Some of of those organisms, such as sea jellies, don't ordinarily fossilize at all. Others, like the early bird Archaeopteryx are preserved in such detail that they are among the most famous and most beautiful fossils in the world. The Solnhofen beds lie in the German state of Bavaria (Bayern), halfway between Nuremberg (Nürnberg) and Munich (München).

About Crustaceans: Crustaceans (Crustacea) are a very large group of arthropods, comprising almost 52,000 described species, and are usually treated as a subphylum. They include various familiar animals, such as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill and barnacles. The majority of them are aquatic, living in either marine or fresh water environments, but a few groups have adapted to life on land - such as terrestrial crabs, terrestrial hermit crabs and woodlice. Crustaceans are among the most successful animals, and are as abundant in the oceans as insects are on land.

Apparently there's a reason for some ammonites being incomplete. The BBC recently had an article about a research paper published by the Geological Society wherein it was discovered that ammonites were eaten by squid.

I was looking at some images of Aeger on other sites and you might be right, this specimen does look very similar.

There are other shrimp genera from Solnhofen, but, Aeger is the one that stands out the most in my mind, mind you.

Thanks.

I actually had thought of cropping this image in such a fashion. I may still do that and upload a cropped version.
