Description

Okay, I gave in and made three more memes tonight: one for Adela Buchanan Wiles, one for her husband, and I'll end on a positive note with their son.

Adela may not be the most lovable character (at first), but there's no such thing as a dull moment with her around.

I'm in the process of reading Gone With the Wind right now, and I'll tell ya, I'm seeing Adela right before my eyes as I read about Scarlett O'Hara. In the first two chapters alone, we read about how Miss Scarlett drove away another girl's potential beau because she couldn't stand the boy not showing interest in her, she believes certain bad things (like a war, the Civil War to be exact) won't happen just because she says they won't, and of course, there's her unhealthy obsession with Ashley Wilkes because he's virtually the only boy she hasn't been able to get her sticky little paws on, the only boy who doesn't moon over her although he is genuinely polite. A classic example of "forbidden fruit."

However, it's also firmly established from the beginning that Scarlett's parents pampered her way too much, especially her father; she's virtually never been told "no" in her entire life, so it kind of makes sense that it would throw her for a serious loop when something doesn't go her way for a change.

That's Adela all over.

I already read The Great Gatsby for college and I just might read it again, but it was none other than Daisy Buchanan who lit the very first spark for this character.

Then, of course, we've got good old Veruca Salt, Romilda Vane, Anastasia and Drizella, the gender-swap version of Disney's Gaston and the ancient Greek Narcissus, Sharpay Evans, Chris Hargensen (even though I never read or watched Carrie and don't really dare), and Angelica Pickles. I get to do to Adela what I would absolutely love to do to all these crazy people.

I'll let you in on a little dark secret, the reason why Romilda Vane is on this list: what made Adela's parents put an official stop to her crazy quest for Romulus and Tallis was her effort to slip Tallis a tainted drink, pretty much the same way Romilda Vane tries to slip Harry Potter a Love Potion.

In Reid's world, they have this drug called Moon Mist, which isn't really toxic (it would take great amounts to come anywhere close to deadly), and when done right, it's great for relaxation when the person is under a lot of emotional distress.

However, an overdose can make the person quite mellow and loopy, put them in complete la-la-land, so they're all but rendered helpless...which means someone else can do pretty much whatever they want with them, with no resistance whatsoever.

You guessed it: it can be a dangerous ingredient in the brew for Drug Rape.

When Romulus refused Adela, when Tallis became King and everybody was pushing him to find a wife as soon as possible (at least the Royal Council was nice enough to let him choose his own wife), Adela got desperate enough to attempt to slip Tallis a Moon-Mist-spiked beverage so that she could "make love" with him in his mellow state and he would have to marry her if he impregnated her.

Not only was Tallis smart enough to not drink anything Adela offered him, but when they got caught, Beowulf had no trouble exposing the little vixen (and messing around with her for pure kicks) when he tried to push the tainted cup to her lips. "Go on, have a drink," he kept urging her with his fanged grin, his yellow eyes shining maliciously. "If it's good enough for Tallis, surely it's good enough for you!"

Then Adela all but screamed out her confession for all ears to hear as she knocked the goblet to the floor.

Both of Adela's parents were absolutely horrified and positively livid, to say the very least. They could neither apologize to the Lactantiuses enough nor drag their fussy daughter out of there fast enough.

"That does it, young lady," her father told her, in a nutshell. "From now on, you will stay far away from Romulus and Tallis, and because you've proven your woeful lack of good judgment, we're choosing a husband for you!"

That's how she ended up with Marlon Wiles instead, and she feared her public reputation, if not her parents' wrath, too much to refuse.

Ironically enough, she not only had the gall to call all this "unfair," but she once told Tallis and Romulus to their faces, when they were all long since grown up with nearly-grown children of their own, "Well, maybe if one of you had married me sooner and been done with it, I would have had no need to take such drastic measures and we all could have been spared this awful humiliation!"

It's enough to make Tallis and Romulus just about knock themselves out with their own facepalms.

Ann would never have dreamed of such a thing in a million years, if that. And that's why Tallis fell in love with her, while Romulus, for all his disputes with Ann, would much rather be stuck in the same room with her than with Adela.
