Description
As fun as it is to talk about things I like, it's also fun to occasionally switch to the exact opposite. That's not to say I despise every single one of these characters with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns. Most of them do have redeeming qualities, and there are a few I like for real; I just don't participate in the blaring choir of praise.
Now, onto the reasons why these ladies and gents rank a bit lower on my personal list:
Because They're Annoying: I like D.W. much, much better in the books, preferably the earlier books. She still had her moments then, of course, but at least she was more entertaining, there was a bit more karma involved, and her parents weren't unbearably clueless morons. As Arthur put it so well in one book, "D.W. must be short for 'Dim Wit.'"
Because They're Bland: Apparently, when they were making a sequel to The Hunchback of Notre Dame, they didn't want to come anywhere close to Frollo. So, they made Sarousch the complete opposite...and, needless to say, they did their job a little too well. Next to Frollo, Sarousch has about as much flavor as cold Ramen noodles.
Because They Don't Make Sense: I'll never understand why Stephenie Meyer thought a character like Edward Cullen would be a good idea, or how certain people found him so enthralling. To quote the old Tootsie Pop commercial, "The world may never know."
Because They're a Mary Sue/Gary Stu: I can see why people are so fed up with Romeo and Juliet. Both characters have their moments, to be sure, and I'll never say the play as a whole is total garbage. That said, even when I borrow elements of their story for my own stories, I like to call it, "How Romeo and Juliet should have ended."
Because of Their Actions: I do like Kent Mansley; he's an intriguing character, with a few comical moments, a rather attractive design, and you can tell Christopher MacDonald had a lot of fun with him. Even so, there's no denying the reprehensibility of what this man does, what he almost brings about, and how he never owns up to any of his mistakes. While karma does eventually catch him, it would have been nice to see a bit more of that karma in action, if only a little bit.
Because of Their Beliefs: Yeah, I don't watch Game of Thrones, but I know enough about Selyse Baratheon and her fanaticism to get the willies something awful.
Because of Subtext: I may not touch 50 Shades of Grey with a 1,009-and-a-half-foot pole, but I frown on Anastasia Steele all the same for teaching women that a man can mistreat her all he likes as long as he's rich and handsome enough. I didn't think it was possible for a literary female to aggravate me more than Bella Swann...and to think, this little piece of rat dung started out as a pornographic Twilight fanfic. Yeesh!
Because They're Idiotic: I liked Mr. Turner a lot better in the early seasons of Fairly Oddparents. Then his stupidity got so criminal that, for me, it just stopped being funny.
Because They're Disturbed: Fire Lord Ozai is a perfect villain, because he's really that disturbing. You find yourself on a constant seesaw between wanting to kick his butt and wanting to run as far away from him as possible.
Because They're Just a Stereotype: High School Musical is about as cliché as they come, and the characters, particularly Sharpay Evans, are about as big a done-to-death stereotype as it's possible to get.
Because They're Too Nice: Jay Gatsby is a little too nice a guy for his own good. He's "nice" to the point where he lets just about everybody walk all over him, and he's more than willing to own up to an awful crime that he didn't commit, just so his "beloved" won't break a fingernail. If love makes you dumb, then this dude wins the solid gold kewpie doll.
Because They're a Despised Cliche: Just like with Mr. Turner and D.W., Eugene Krabs was much more palatable and fun in the beginning...before those guys went to Jupiter (and beyond) with his money lust.
Because of Their Indolence: Simba isn't the worst character out there, but he falls woefully short of the best. He's all right as a cub, and he's not too shabby as an adult. What sours him for me (before the sequel) is how he takes it too far with the "Hakuna Matata" mindset. Even after hearing how bad things have gotten at home since he ran away, he refuses to go back; he's willing to let everybody starve, let his father's entire legacy wither away, because he can't "face" his painful past. He figures it's better to ignore his problems than actually solve them. And yes, I know this is all part of his character growth, and he does "finally get some sense knocked into him." But I'm telling you, mates, I just want to take Rafiki's staff and go all "Edna Mode" on Simba with it: smack him multiple times in a row and shout in his face, "Pull...yourself...together!" Even so, as I said, he's not as bad as he is in movie #2; that's where my fondness for him plummets like a brick.
Because I Can't Relate: Tigress is supposed to be a sympathetic character, and to an extent, she is. But I still have a hard time getting too close to her, because she's just that prickly; it's like trying to hug a cactus. At least Po finally gets his chance to tell her off, telling her to her face that, for all her greatness as a warrior, she's a sucky friend. And she does get her act together, even if she takes her sweet time with it. As with Simba, I dislike other characters more than Tigress, but I also like other characters more.
Because They're a Jerk Without Flaws: There's no denying Han Solo kicks butt...perhaps a little too hard. He's a lovable rogue, albeit with too much emphasis on "rogue" and too little on "lovable."
Because They Make Me Cringe: Kylo Ren makes me cringe in more ways than one. It's basically a repeat of Anakin's story and Luke's story, only with a great deal more angst, and as with the previous two stories, there's the typical contractual obligation of "romance." This is what convinces me that they've spread the Star Wars saga a tad too thin.
Because They're Gross: Patrick Star, like Eugene Krabs, is better at the beginning, and his body humor is better in small doses. Too much body humor just plain stinks.
Because They're Deceitful: Mother Gothel easily ranks among Frollo, Lady Tremaine, and Prince Hans for her frightening, if not downright brutal realism. As convincing as she is, I still draw the line at the lengths she'll go and the people she'll hurt to get what she wants. Not even family will stand in her way.
Because They're Smug: For all my dislike of Simba, I will admit he has a legitimate reason for his behavior. Kuzco ranks even lower because Kuzco is an unadulterated moron, a jerk pretty much for the sake of being a jerk. To be fair, he has his moments, he can elicit at least a couple of laughs from me, and he's so much better at story's end. But 90% of the time, I just want to punch him and I feel Pacha lets him off way too easy.
Because They're Just Eye Candy: In just about every movie, Barbie is little more than a pretty face. But I did like her in The Magic of Pegasus; while it wasn't perfect by any means, she did have a legitimate problem on her plate and she was trying to make up for some serious mistakes, so this pretty parcel contained at least some character development.
Because They're Hypocritical: From what I gather, Cersei Lannister is the Queen of Hypocrites. 'Nuff said.
Because They Whine Too Much: Yes, Max is a teenager, so he's still learning and maturing, and yes, Goofy's got his faults as well. All too soon, I reach the end of my rope and I grumble to Max, "Oh, why don't you just sit down and be quiet?" An Extremely Goofy Movie marks the very bottom of the barrel.
Because They're Spastic: There seems to be some sort of contest with Harley Quinn and every flipping Batman show they crank out: how much "crazier" can they make her? When is enough "enough"? Apparently, in her case, it's never enough.
Because They're Toxic: I would sympathize more with Cassandra if she wasn't so awful to start with. She resorts to extremely underhanded moves and only admits defeat when someone much stronger takes her down, and somehow, she seems "shocked" that this defeat happened. She's one of those insufferable jerks who can dish it out plenty but can't stomach a single spoonful of their own medicine.
Because They're a Bad Relative: As awesome as she may be as a villain, Azula is everything a daughter, sister, and niece should not be, and then some. When Uncle Iroh says with neither hesitation nor flinching that "she must be taken down," you know this is a huge deal indeed.
Because They Lack Emotion: For all my love of The Last Unicorn, Schmendrick the Magician by far falls the flattest. Besides the character's almost unchanging facial expression, Alan Arkin has this incredibly dull monotone that even Peter S. Beagle couldn't help noticing. Tammy Grimes was far more dynamic as Molly Grue, as was Christopher Lee as King Haggard, Jeff Bridges as Prince Lir, and Angela Lansbury as Mommy Fortuna. Even Mia Farrow gave Lady Amalthea more personality than this.
Because They Never Face Comeuppance: The most aggravating thing about the Coachman is how he all but gets off scot-free with his dreadful actions. On the other hand, this makes his defeat in the video game all the more cathartic, and I've drawn a picture of my Terence personally taking him down with little more than his bare hands. My Beowulf would have mauled the fat fiend from head to toe.
Because They're Mean: Need I say more about King Joffrey?
Because They're a Blatant Rip-off: While I like Ling, Yao, and Chien-Po okay (better in the first Mulan than the second), they give off a few too many vibes of "The Three Stooges." Not that that's a bad thing, but it just feels like they try too hard.
Because They're Disrespectful: In all fairness, Peter Pan has the common sense of a child because that's what he is: a child. Regardless, I only tolerate him so much, most of all when Wendy is involved. He's clearly got little to no respect for girls, and poor Wendy gets the shortest end of the stick. He whisks her into life-threatening danger on a whim, and she must either fend for herself or he must swoop in at the last second to save her. He acts somewhat interested in her in a romantic sense, but then gets all flirty with another girl right in front of her. When other people pick on her, he not only laughs about it but has the nerve to treat her like she's in the wrong when she retaliates. And when she's finally had enough and wants to go home, he couldn't care less. Only when he almost gets blown to kingdom come does he wake up, and I appreciate how they showed in Return to Never Land that, while Peter still hadn't grown up, he had matured somewhat. He's still a jerk to Jane, but so much less of a jerk than he had been to Wendy...which is nice.
Because They're a Screen-Hog: For me, Timon and Pumbaa hog up so much of the movie (and so much of the franchise, for that matter) that you would think it was more their story than Simba's story. They may have saved Simba's life but I don't believe they did him any real favors in the long run. As far as comic relief goes, Rafiki makes me laugh more.
Because of Their Role in the Group: It's not entirely Drizella's fault she's as awful as she is. What separates her from Anastasia is she chooses to remain awful; with a little help, Anastasia finds the initiative to get out from under her mother's thumb, find a man she actually likes, and become a worthy sister to Cinderella, whereas Drizella never changes at all...unless you count her sinking further and further.
Because They Pander to a Demographic: I don't mind Rey so much as I mind the "political correctness" vibe she gives off. They're essentially telling Star Wars all over again, only this time, it's a girl who saves the day. Again, it's not so much a girl saving the day I object to as it is an exact replica of the story, with minor tweaks at best. A woeful lack of creativity, if you ask me.
Because They're a Mockery: Sure, I wasn't so crazy about Scrappy-Doo in the cartoons. Today, I like him best in Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers because he actually helps to get things done; he's the most helpful and the least annoying. Come the 2002 live-action movie, I just gotta shut my eyes and scream to high heaven, "OH, COME ON!"
Because They're Terrifying: My main reason for avoiding Stephen King is because I'm not a fan of horror, and as a renowned writer with a specialty in horror, this man does his job far too well. The same can be said for his characters, most of all Carrie White: I don't read the book or watch the movies, not because the story itself is no good, but because the character and her experiences are that scary. I well remember the first time I saw her image and read the synopsis on Wikipedia; it was a good while before I could bring myself to look at it again. I can't even bring myself to watch a clip on YouTube.
Because of Their Fan Base: I like Korra, but good grief, don't get me started on her fan base. Let's just say her fans and her creators are what keep me from embracing her completely. Sheesh!
Because They're Overrated: I like Elsa, too. There's nothing inherently wrong with her. All the same, I'm much more partial to Anna; Anna's not only more relatable but she's the true heroine, whereas everybody only likes Elsa as much as they do because Elsa's more glamorous.
Because They Do Not Age Well: Though I feel viewers are slightly too critical of the Red Men in Peter Pan, I can understand why they feel that way. Unlike the Crows in Dumbo, the Red Men don't add to the story quite as much and the racial stereotypes are more glaring, with Big Chief being the most glaring. Tiger Lily is by far the most palatable.
Because Their Lines are Garbage: I consider Mulan 2 the worst Disney sequel of them all, one of the reasons being a script that's cheesier than an eight-cheese pizza. There's almost nothing captivating about any of the dialogue, from any of the characters, and the three princesses (don't bother to recall their names) are no exception. The end of cheap sequels for Disney classics came not long after, and I like to hope this one played a significant role.
Because They Changed Too Much: I know Daenerys was no saint throughout the series. Even so, I was rather surprised at her fantastic swan dive into insanity, how she got to the point where the only way to stop her was to kill her.
Because They Badly Influenced Me: In actuality, Angelica Pickles taught me how not to behave. While she may be entertaining in her own way, I sincerely hope she didn't have too much of a negative influence on other children's behavior. Kids do imitate TV a whole lot more than we realize.
BECAUSE I DON'T: At last, we've arrived at my last and least loved character: Isabella Swann Cullen. I never liked her then, and I don't like her now. Out of all my reasons for despising Twilight, Miss Bella was (and continues to be) Reason Numero Uno. I made it as far as the first chapter of the first book before I gave up, and for a time (a super-short time) I liked Edward more. The only nice thing I'll say about her is she has taught me how I want my female protagonists to be, coupled with how a love story should not be written.
Whew...I'm actually physically tired from putting this list (and all these explanations) together. As fun as it was, I'm most definitely due for a break!
