I thought Timothy was just sick. I have copies of the both the book and the movie myself. Saw the movie in Grade 3, back in 1992, when they were celebrating the 10th anniversary. Our math teacher read the book to us that same year.

IMO, I don't think it was Robyn's father's idea to let her "aunt" take care of her. It could have been Child Protective Services. While they generally do good work placing children in caring homes, they do sometimes make mistakes. And in movies/TV/books, CPS tend to make HUGE mistakes, to make things more dramatic. Besides which, you remember the scene where she's talking to the police, and crying her eyes out? Naturally, she has to make it look like she's a caring parent to the outside world. Again, just my opinion.
