Description
This is another character meme I thought I should fill out, too. This time, these are the characters I sympathize with the most.
Because They're One of the Best: Henry The Green Engine (Thomas the Tank Engine) Henry is my favorite character on this show for a number of reasons: he's a gentle giant with a few flaws, he learns from his mistakes (most of the time), and he's overall awesome. The reason I put him in this spot is because he's gone through a lot of crap in the first few seasons of Thomas and Friends. For example, he was shut up in a tunnel as punishment for being vain about his coat of paint on a rainy day; he was ridiculed for not having the right kind of coal to function properly and pull trains on time; and, he had a hard time with the Flying Kipper. Henry's sad theme song is also one of the saddest pieces of music I've ever heard in my life. I know that things usually turn out all right in the end for Henry in his starring episodes, but still...
Because They Suffer From Loss: Nestor the Donkey (Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey) Last Christmas, I watched this Rankin/Bass special from the 70s for the first time, and boy - did I feel sorry for poor little Nestor! Not only was he bullied by the other animals for his abnormally long ears, but he also lost his mother when he was stranded in a blizzard, and she risked her life to save her baby; Nestor's mother was one of only a few characters in this special who really appreciated him for who he was. I know that Nestor finds happiness when he meets a friendly angel named Tillie, and he eventually succeeds in bringing Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem for baby Jesus to be born, but it's hard to watch this stop-motion short without feeling sad for Nestor - especially when he loses his mama.
Because They're Abused: Ruth Jamison (Fried Green Tomatoes) While I also feel bad for Idgie Threadgoode when she loses her brother, Buddy, at the beginning, and when she is accused of murder; I mainly feel bad for Ruth Jamison, because she is in an abusive marriage with Frank Bennett. Frank verbally and physically abuses poor Ruth, and even goes so far as to stalking her and their baby son after Ruth moves away from him. I know that Idgie and the other townspeople of Whistle Stop take Ruth under their wings and do everything they can to defend her from Frank's abuse, but I still feel sorry for Ruth not being able to have a full and happy life; (SPOILER) she dies young from cancer at the end of the movie.
Because They're Disabled: Sam Dawson (I Am Sam) Sam is a mentally disabled man with the mind of a seven-year-old who is made a single father after his daughter, Lucy, is born. For a while, all is well with Sam and Lucy, despite the fact that Sam is mentally challenged. Before long, Sam is threatened with the fact that Lucy could be taken away from him to a foster family, because she is growing to be more intellectual than him. Sam eventually finds help with a lawyer called Rita Harrison, and as I watched clips of this movie online, I knew what Sam was going through, because while I am very smart, I have high-functioning autism, which is considered a disability.
Because They Suffer From Guilt: Elsa (Frozen) When she and her younger sister, Anna, were young, Elsa would have fun showcasing her magical snow and ice powers, and she had a close bond with Anna. But one day, Elsa accidentally hit Anna in the head with her magic, and then her parents took them to see some trolls, where the leader, Grand Pabbie, said that fear would be Elsa's enemy as she grew, and that Elsa needed to find a way on how to control her powers. Her parents feared that everyone would fear the icy powers, so they separated Elsa and Anna, and then made Elsa wear gloves and hide her emotions - which were connected to her powers. During this whole time, and even after Anna accidentally made Elsa reveal her powers at the coronation ball, Elsa was struck with guilt for hurting her sister, and stayed very distant from Anna (Anna, in return, felt that Elsa didn't love her anymore, and wanted to know why). Elsa feels even more remorse when she accidentally freezes Anna in the heart, and then Anna freezes shortly after she saves her from Prince Hans, who wanted to kill both the sisters in order to seize power of Arrendale. I know that Anna melts and Elsa learns to control her powers with love (and by just being herself), but it's hard not to feel sorrow for the poor Snow Queen.
Because of Subtext: Moses (The Prince of Egypt) This man was a Hebrew who was raised by Egyptians after his mother set him adrift in a basket to save him from being killed by Pharaoh's wrath. For a while, Moses had a tight-knit relationship with his adoptive family (particularly his foster brother, Rameses), but while he followed Tzipporah the Midian girl into a village one night to make amends for humiliating her at a banquet, Moses bumped into his biological siblings, Miriam and Aaron. Miriam then told Moses the truth about his heritage, and Moses was in denial at first; a nightmare and hieroglyphics on the walls soon confirmed Miriam's story that Moses was a Hebrew, and his mother, Yocheved, saved his life by setting him adrift in a basket upon the Nile. Things get even worse for him when he kills an Egyptian slave driver to stand up for an elderly Hebrew slave, and then Moses runs away in self-exile, where he makes amends with Tzipporah and marries her in Midian. But one day, God sends Moses on a mission to go and save the Hebrews from slavery; Moses feels ashamed to do so, as he was the Prince of Egypt, and he feels that God's task is even more difficult, as Rameses is now the pharaoh. Throughout the movie, I show sympathy for Moses, whether he is shocked or guilty over what's going on in Egypt, when he falls in a mud pit and Aaron tells him off like an a**hole, and when he lets God release the last plague: Death of the Firstborn, which kills Egyptian children - including Rameses' son. I know Moses and the other Hebrews find happiness and freedom at the end, but still...
Because They Can't Catch a Break: Cinderella (all versions of the fairy tale - especially 1950) This is one of my favorite fairy tales and Disney movies for a reason - an underdog heroine. We watch poor Cinderella go through all kinds of crap with her wicked and lazy stepfamily - hard chores 24/7, being forced to sleep in a tiny attic, and having her new dress (recycled from her mother's old dress) torn apart. Lady Tremaine, the stepmother, even goes so far as to locking the poor girl up in the attic to prevent her from trying the glass slipper and marrying the handsome prince! I know Cindy's hope is restored with the help of her animal friends and a Fairy Godmother, and she does try the glass slipper and marry the prince, but I can't help but feel sorry for all the pain she goes through in the story.
Because They're Misunderstood: Balto (1995) In this movie, Balto is a wolf-dog hybrid. But despite the fact that he has wolf blood in him, he wouldn't harm a fly, and he cares deeply about his friends. However, the people of Nome ridicule him for having wolf's blood, and Balto is also regularly bullied by Steele, the champion racer. The only characters who do care about him are Boris the snow goose, Muk and Luk the polar bear brothers, Jenna the beautiful husky, and Jenna's young owner, Rosy. Sure, Balto finds happiness after he successfully brings medicine to Nome to save ailing children's lives, and then he is praised by the town and Steele's FORMER friends, but I always feel sorry for him when nobody understands who he truly is.
Because They're Innocent: Simba (The Lion King) As a young cub, Simba was told by his uncle Scar that he was the one who killed his father, Mufasa; in reality, Scar was the one who murdered Mufasa in order to seize power over the Pride Lands. Simba spends most of his life in exile with Timon and Pumbaa; most of the time, he has a worry-free life with his new friends, but at some points in the movie, he feels saddened and guilty for what happened to his father. I sympathize with him, because even though he doesn't know it, Simba is actually innocent of killing Mufasa. I know that he finds out the terrible truth and defeats Scar at the end, but still, I can't help but feel pity for when Simba's happy childhood came crashing down.
Because They're Desperate: Sea Rogue (Tugs: Pirate) In the Tugs episode "Pirate", barges are going missing, and Ten Cents gets the blame. But one night, he and Grampus, the submarine, discover that the barges were stolen by this guy - Sea Rogue. Sea Rogue may look rough on the outside, but deep in his heart, he is desperate to free himself and his uncle from slavery under a couple of pirates. Sure, Ten Cents' innocence is proven and Sea Rogue and his Uncle are set free at the end, but I still feel sorry for Sea Rogue when he is forced to commit theft, and is desperate to have freedom for himself and his poor uncle.
Because They Try and Often Fail: Fa Mulan (Disney's Mulan (1998)) I prefer the original animated Mulan for a number of reasons, and the titular heroine in this movie is the main reason. Mulan is a smart and loyal young woman who always wants to impress her family by bringing great honor. But, of course, she starts off as clumsy and self-conscious; she failed her visit with the Matchmaker, and she got into an argument with her father, who is forced to go to war, despite the fact that he is crippled. Mulan even goes so far as to disguising herself as a male soldier to join the army and save her father (as women were forbidden to fight by the death sentence), and she tries numerous attempts to fit in before she succeeds and eventually goes into battle (after Mushu the dragon forged a letter from the army's general, telling his son, Shang, to take his troops into the mountains and fight off the Huns). But just as she wipes out most of the Huns by producing an avalanche, Mulan is injured and her cross-dressing secret is found out by Shang and a certain Chinese version of Judge Claude Frollo (I'm looking at YOU, Chi-Fu!) I know that Shang spares her from being executed, because she saved his life, and then Mulan is later praised by the Emperor for defeating the Huns and saving China, but I always feel sorry for her, because she sometimes fails - even when she tries her hardest to bring honor to her family and be proud.
Because I've Been In Their Place: Carrie White (Stephen King's Carrie) I strongly pity this horror heroine, because I know exactly how she feels. Poor Carrie is constantly bullied at school by just about everyone (except for Tommy Ross, Miss Collins/Desjarden, and Sue Snell - who used to bully her, but then felt remorse), and her religious mother, Margaret, physically and mentally abuses her, because the mother thinks her daughter is a demon from Hell! When I was middle school, I was bullied for having autism, so I feel for poor Carrie; what's worse - my parents (and most of the sh*t-assed school staff) didn't do anything about my bullying! And it's also a shame that Carrie's one chance at shining at the school prom was ruined by a certain c*nt called Chris Hargenson, and Carrie released her telekinesis as revenge. But that's not all - Carrie dies at the end of her story! I hope Carrie gets reincarnated into a girl with a better life.
Because Their Dreams Were Crushed: The Once-Ler (The Lorax) Say what you want about this movie, but I can't help but feel sorry for this guy! The Once-Ler was bound for great things at first; he was able to leave his dysfunctional family behind to explore a Truffula forest, and then he created his first Thneed - a scarf-like invention - with Truffula leaves. But the Lorax warned him to be kind to the environment and not chop so many trees down to gather Truffula leaves to create Thneeds. Oncie seemed to go along with his promise at first, but then his stupid greedy family showed up, and turned him into a tree-chopping tycoon who sold thousands of thneeds. But after the last Truffula tree was cut down, Oncie's family heartlessly abandoned him, and the Lorax disappeared after he said that he would only return if more people cared about the environment. The poor Once-Ler was left on his own, feeling remorse for what he did, and I can't blame him, since he took his dreams for granted, and then they were all crushed before too long.
Because of Their Cruel Fate: Eduard "Del" Delacroix (The Green Mile) While he was on death row, this poor inmate got so much abuse from a certain Percy Wetmore, who broke three of Del's fingers with his baton, called him a gay slur, stomped on his pet mouse, Mr. Jingles (but the mouse was resurrected by John Coffey), and then put him in the electric chair with a dry sponge, causing Del to die a horrific death! While I also feel bad for John Coffey (more on him later), I feel bad for Del, not only because of the crap he gets from Percy, but mainly because of his terrible fate in the electric chair.
Because Nobody Helped Them: Quasimodo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) I feel bad for this underrated Disney hero - not only because he spends his whole life in a bell tower being told by Frollo that the world is cruel and people will hurt him for his looks - but also because he never got any help when he was being tortured at the Feast of Fools. That psycho-goth b***ard Frollo just sat there as the man he was forced to see as his surrogate son kept getting cruelly humiliated until Esmeralda the gypsy arrived to the scene and put a stop to the torture and told Frollo off (if I were there, I would go O-Ren Ishii from Kill Bill, decapitate one of the partygoers, and then give a speech that ends with "NOW'S THE F**KING TIME!") Since that incident, Esmeralda was Quasi's only true friend until he and Phoebus traveled to the Court of Miracles to warn the gypsies of Frollo plotting to murder them all, and then Quasi saved the whole city of Paris from Frollo's rule. I know that he is accepted as a hero and true citizen at the end of the film, but I still can't help but sympathize with him when something goes wrong.
Because Nobody Forgives Them: Sue Snell (Carrie) Like I said before, Sue used to bully Carrie White, but after Miss Collins/Desjarden lectured her and the other mean girls for insulting Carrie when she had her first period, Sue felt sorry and remorseful for what she did. Sue wanted to be Carrie's friend, and even let her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, take Carrie to the prom instead of her. Still, Miss Collins/Desjarden believed that Sue was up to trouble again, and acted unforgiving towards her. Even when she snuck into the prom to check on Carrie, and eventually tried to warn her of the nasty prank by Chris Hargenson, Sue was still believed to be causing trouble by the gym teacher, and was forced to leave. If I were Sue, I would go ahead and write a letter of apology to Carrie, or maybe even apologize to her in front of the gym teacher, because if that happened, Sue would've probably been forgiven for her actions, and then Carrie would also have a happier ending.
Because They Have No One to Love: Blanky (The Brave Little Toaster) This poor little guy, like his four other companions, was abandoned by his beloved master many years ago, and he still waits for him to come home to this day. When Blanky learns that the Master is gone for good, he breaks down, and I can't help but feel sorry for him. Blanky is also shunned upon by the other members of the Main 5 during the journey to find the Master, as he just wants someone to love him and cuddle him. I know that the Toaster (more on him later) warms up to Blanky after seeing a lonely flower, but still...
Because of Their Performance: Erik (The Phantom of the Opera (2004)) Although he kills people in the opera house, Erik is still a sympathetic villain, because of his tragic backstory of being viewed as a circus freak (due to his facial deformity), and how he falls in love with Christine Daae when she is also in love with her childhood friend, Raoul Victome-deChangy (however you spell his name lmao). As I watched this movie, I thought that Gerard Butler gave a powerful performance as this musical genius who will do anything for love...
Because of Those Who Hate Them: Casper the Friendly Ghost Casper is not like other ghosts, who enjoy haunting and scaring the daylights out of people; Casper - as his name suggests - is very kind-hearted, and would rather have friends to play with and talk to. But all the other ghosts he comes across (particularly his uncles, the Ghostly Trio) shun him and put him down for being friendly. I always feel pity for him whenever any living creatures are too scared of him to be his friends, or whenever he loses a friend he was very close to in any particular episodes (especially when he lost a fox kit to a hunter in the tear-jerking "There's Good Boos Tonight"). Even though Casper does find true friends in most of his adventures, I still can't help but feel for him when he's lonely, as I have very few friends in real life.
Because of the Setting's Impact: John Coffey (The Green Mile) As I've said before, I truly feel sympathy for this gentle giant. The story is set in 1930s Louisiana, when racism, discrimination, and Jim Crow Laws were common, and so John in the first place was never treated as an equal. On death row, John sadly awaits his fate as he performs various miracles to make me root for him (like healing Paul Edgecomb's bladder infection, healing Mr. Jingles the mouse, and even healing the prison warden's wife of a deadly brain tumor), and then there's the ending scene where he ultimately decides to go in the electric chair, because "(he's) tired" of all the cruel acts in the world and trying to make things right to no avail. And with Michael Clarke Duncan's untimely passing of a heart attack in 2012, John's character is all the more sympathetic.
Because of Their Society's Impact: Judy Hopps (Zootopia) While I also feel bad for Nick Wilde due to the fact that predators are turned against in the movie (before it's revealed that Dawn Bellweather the sheep was actually plotting to get rid of all the predators in Zootopia to let prey take over), I feel sympathy for Judy Hopps the rabbit for the crap she is faced with. When she was younger, Judy was told that rabbits couldn't be police officers, because they just weren't fit to fight crime; that didn't stop her as she managed to complete police academy with a strong will and determination, even though the other animals in the Zootopia Police Department were skeptical of her (particularly Chief Bogo). During the course of the movie, I sympathize with her as she tries her best and sometimes fails, and I also root for when she and Nick save the day by exposing Bellweather's crimes against predators; still, Judy deserves a great deal of respect for trying to fit in.
Because They Can't Handle It All: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (all adaptations; particularly the 1998 movie)) Rudolph was born with a shiny red nose, but he was put down by his fellow reindeer, because his nose was different from everyone else's. In the 1998 version, Rudolph was mercilessly bullied by the other creatures of the North Pole (particularly by another reindeer called Arrow), except for his parents and a female reindeer named Zoey. He was even bumped out of the reindeer games JUST BECAUSE HIS NOSE WAS RED AND SHINY! I know that Rudolph was able to put his nose to good use by leading Santa's sleigh when a fog covered the whole North Pole, and Santa needed to see what he was doing as he delivered gifts; still, I can't help but feel sorry for Rudolph, because he's received so much crap, and he couldn't do anything about his nose.
Because Their Struggles Feel Real: Toaster (The Brave Little Toaster) This little chrome hero does live up to his name, as he leads his friends in a journey to find their beloved master, but this journey gets him into all kinds of danger and emotion. I've been in a few situations to relate to the Toaster (like putting a few people down and regretting it - as Toaster did with Blanky until he saw the lonely flower), but I feel his struggles as he and his friends try to find their master and be permanently settled in a forever home to be used regularly. Luckily, the main 5 are reunited with their master as he takes them with him to college, but I still have a heart for the Toaster during his most emotional or tough moments.
Because I Do: Horror (The Pagemaster) Like Quasimodo, Horror also bears a rather hideous appearance, but deep under his covers and pages, he is a gentle sweetheart. ^^ Since most horror stories don't have happy endings, all this little guy wants is a happy ending, and someone to check him out and care for him. I also feel bad for when Adventure insults Horror, telling him that he would never match up to him (even though Adventure makes amends with him after rescuing him from some Lilliputians from Gulliver's Travels). Horror and the other books are able to get checked out from the library by Richard Tyler, but I still have my heart strings tugged whenever Horror feels down, because I just think he's an underrated and highly sympathetic character!
