This is really nice. You have good control of the brush. Have you ever tried painting freehand in say acrylics? They dry faster than oils so if you make a mistake you can just paint over it. Try painting on a canvas if you haven't done it. There is something to be said about the way it has a life of it's own when it is stretched, and paper does not do it.

Yes, those were acrylics, but they are not the better quality acrylics. They are watered down, low color saturation (thus why on the rainbow you can still see the number through the red). This is nothing against you, I think you did wonderful, and I want to suggest you try and break free of the limits this presents.
I thought this was on paper or board. Is it on canvas?!?!
