Description Little red-back jumping spider climbed into my little glass jar all by himself... needless to say I took lots of photos before releasing him into the wild.

Awe! thank you so kindly! I'm honored that you like him so! I wish I could have got more of his beautiful red back, but he was very jittery and loved to move so I finally let him go outside.

Aw he is cute. *nods* My husband was in the air force and we moved around at least a few times ourselves. Best thing I can suggest if you both decide to stick it out and he goes in is to try and find some hobbies to do. Photography can be a good one depending on the area you move to. I wish you both luck though and hope he changes his mind about joining. In 2011, they actually had to take volunteers for members to get out early because they enlisted too many. That and sometimes the military doesn't pay nearly as much as one would hope or if it does, the money isn't almost worth the headache of it.

Thank you so kindly!

And thank you for the advice.
Sadly the starting pay they were talking about is more than what him and me make together currently.
But all our friends keep going off that the military is nothing but lies... so we don't know what to think.

There seems like there are so many benefits to joining, but actually hearing that it almost isn't worth the headache of it actually does strike a cord.
So would you say that the whole career idea isn't worth the trouble? We've been seriously re-considering the whole joining bit. We want to hear the truth that the recruiter isn't telling us.
Thank you again!

No problem. I apologize for the delay in reply.

*nods* Yeah the pay may seem good, but you also have to weigh in that you would not be getting any overtime pay. So if he normally works 8 hour shifts daily with weekends off, and they call him in for a full 12 or 24 hour shift one day, he won't get any overtime pay for it. I can't remember the term for that off the top of my head, but his pay would be the same every two weeks regardless of how many hours he works. However in the Air Force, I think it'd be easier on him than any other branch of the military. From my understanding they are a little more laid back than say the Army or Marines.

I think a few of the biggest benefits in joining the military is the health insurance and on-base housing. I know all of my trips to the hospital and pharmacy on base were all paid by TriCare(Health Insurance Company), and while living on-base in housing, we actually didn't have any electric/water/gas bills to worry about. I think the only thing we had to pay for with utilities was the internet and cell phone services we had active there. If anything was to break in your house on-base, they'd send someone out to fix it so long as you didn't break it or if you had pets, they didn't break it. >.> We had two dogs then and they ripped the a/c line to pieces. Luckily we didn't have to pay for it since it looked like it had just busted since it was so old. Thank goodness for that. lol Also they provide you with light bulbs, filters for the AC/Heater unit, any kind of insecticides(ant baits, roach baits, etc, and trash service.

So yeah, there are a lot of things to weigh in when deciding whether or not it's worth the trouble. Personally to me and my husband, we'd never go back in unless absolutely necessary, but the whole decision on whether or not you guys go in is entirely up to you. I can guarantee you though that you will not be staying in one spot his entire career unless they plan to keep the unit/squadron in the same area that entire time. During my husband's time in the AF, we moved at least twice. I think if he had stayed in they would have probably cross-trained him in another field since the C-130 planes were about to start being decommissioned from active duty.

I think in reality, the career is very helpful when trying to find jobs since after so long and he gets out on good terms, he'd get what they call Veterans Preference, which basically gives him status over any other applicants for jobs out there on the market. From what I hear, if you stay in long enough to get the retirement, it is well worth it. My husband didn't stay in that long since they were doing a mass-reshape of the force back in 2011, but apparently with the United States Postal Office, you can actually pay from your paycheck every two weeks into the retirement plan and actually still get it, like I said though so long as you got out on good terms.

Anyways, hope that helped you out a bit in you and your husband's decision. Let me know if you have any questions, I'll try to answer as best as possible, if I can. Not a problem at all.

Thank you for that information! I had to let my husband read it before I responded.
I think he's set on a four year contract to see how well he likes it before jumping into something long term.
This way he can get the veteran benefits that will hopefully help him find a job in where we are wanting to move.
Part of me is nervous of traveling but I guess we can all adjust.
If I think of any (or if he does) I'll definitely do so! Thank you so much again!

SpectralDraconicWolf In reply to UnicornLovesCoffee [2014-09-16 16:35:15 +0000 UTC]

Hey, no problem. *nods* Yeah four years shouldn't be too terribly bad. I would suggest though if you both can afford it, do the DIY move, because if you choose the right stuff(hotels to stay at on the move, rental trucks, gas prices for fill-ups in the rental truck), you can actually make money when you both move to his duty station/base. That's what me and my husband did and I believe each time we moved we made about 800 or so. Once you both move to where you need to go, they should tell him where he can go to get reimbursed for the move costs. I forgot what they called it. He should be able to ask his supervisor about it.

Yeah the benefits like the G.I. Bill are good to have. My husband is actually going to college right now through online and it has covered all the expenses that he would have had to pay out of pocket. If I remember correctly you can use the G.I. Bill even while you are active duty, so if you're husband had plans to do college for whatever, then this may be the opportunity he was looking for. Depending on the college, if he does online, he should have plenty of time to do any coursework that he needs to submit without ever having to step foot through a college building.

I think you'll both be just fine. n_n I wasn't too terribly thrilled about moving across the states, but at the same time I got to see places I didn't know about and experience many different cultures as well. So it was definitely interesting. Aw, you're welcome. Both of you are. n_n I'm happy to help another out. I feel sometimes that many military members don't get what they need to know firsthand these days.

I'm not even sure what he's gunning for, I think a little of all of it.
We may hold off for a few years now though, too much war talk... and not to mention all this stuff that needs fixed on this house so we can sell it.
Everyone keeps saying that if they want to they can move him from his goal of being a mechanic to having to go fight. I'm not sure on this side of the neighborhood, who to listen to. I'm glad I got experienced people on here though.
Either or it gives us time to make some goals. He's still really excited about it.

SpectralDraconicWolf In reply to UnicornLovesCoffee [2014-09-23 15:37:53 +0000 UTC]

Gotcha. I can't say I blame you there. I know it'd be hard to sell a house if it isn't fixed. Even if you did manage to sell it, I don't think you'd get all the money you could out of it.

Anyways, yeah in the military if he's a mechanic and they have a need for fighters, they can technically try to cross-train him over, or so I've also been told. I think it also depends on how fit a member is though as well. If they're more suited for mechanical stuff and show no promises of making it as a fighter, then they may not try to cross-train him. *nods* I was very worried that my husband was going to be cross-trained to another job though since there were rumors going around with war talk.

I agree. It really does pay to have experienced people to talk to. Especially when they aren't influenced by the military or as my husband likes to say "Brainwashed". XD Be sure to tell him to try to not let the guys higher in rank push him around, otherwise they'll try using him as a fall person when no one feels like driving in to cover a shift for someone else that had some reason for not being there for it. They kind of pushed my husband around like that a bit too much in my own opinion.

Well I hope you both have a good time, and good luck with it if he decides to join for certain. I have a feeling you'll both be fine. Also don't get the Military S.T.A.R. card if you can help it, or any other loans for that matter. If anything was to happen with his career, for instance, they force him to voluntarily quit because they have another mass-reshaping of the force, you'll still be responsible for paying them even after he's done with the military. We kind of made that mistake and are now having to pay off a couple at a time since our money is very limited. Granted my husband works at the Post Office now and is getting paid more than the military, but now we've also got rent/utilities to pay.

Anyways, best wishes and good luck.

UnicornLovesCoffee In reply to SpectralDraconicWolf [2014-09-23 21:56:39 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I can totally see my husband being pushed around. He's kind of a smaller guy to begin with with a sensitive heart. He thinks the cross-training thing is a bunch of bull because his military co-workers but it's interesting that everywhere and one I speak to keeps mentioning it. I'm glad he's not doing that right now.
Oh, that was one thing he had been looking at for buying a new house wherever we go. He was told the military loan was a major perk he wanted to use. Thanks for the warning on that one.
Fortunately for now I can put it aside. And thank you on the luck, we certainly need it. And same to you!

SpectralDraconicWolf In reply to UnicornLovesCoffee [2014-09-24 22:40:03 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like my husband too. He's a smaller guy than the rest and more feminine than most as well. I figured it wasn't too uncommon for them to use the lower man on the totem pole, so to speak, for cross-training into other jobs. As long as you guys can avoid the Military STAR card, you'll stand a better chance of paying whatever you buy off. I would suggest staying away from USAA banking if you can because they've ripped us off several times while trying to repay loans and our previous car loan. I think they're trying again with one loan we're attempting to pay off. >.<; Pioneer Military Lending and State Farm Bank are pretty good. They're more willing to work with you. If you have a bank account with State Farm, should you ever get overdrafted for something throughout the year and normally you don't go into the negative, they have a good member overdraft reimbursement they can do for you to give you back the overdraft fees or at least the majority. We're actually about to use that since that USAA debt we had overdrew how much they said they were and caused us to go into the negative which gave us a overdraft fee. The only thing with State Farm's bank is that they only have an actual bank branch in Texas, so to withdraw money you need to go to an ATM(which you actually get back the money for withdrawals every month), and they also have Online Banking which connects with your auto insurance policy and/or renter's insurance policy for easy access. At the moment we've got all three services from State Farm and so far I've been very happy with my service through them.

Anyways, you're very welcome and thank you as well. n_n
