Description So, I was watching a video from LavenderTowne on youtube and got some tips on how to get your own style a bit better. One of those was, find a character you know and love, and just copy it. No tracing. Just copy it. So, I attempted to copy Maka Albarn from Soul Eater - the first anime that I completely finished and loved <3 <3 <3

I did a little bit of shading, but nothing too drastic cause I'm still learning shading. Kinda hoping for an art class next semester~ Wouldn't that be awesome? Finally getting to learn what I'm going to college for??? LOL!

This is great! The top half, down until the top of the shoulders, is amazing. But below the top of the shoulders is where it goes a little wonky. The anatomy of her left shoulder seems pretty unnatural, and the lineart is a lot less polished than the head and hair, it seems more like a sketch than finished lineart. The colouring on Maka's cloak is a little weird, too - in the screenshot, it's obviously black, but in your drawing, it's sort of a mix of green and dirty red-brown, which doesn't really make sense. It would've looked much better if you'd kept the green, but shaded it with a dark grey.
Overall, this is really great! Except for the things I mentioned, I think this could actually better than the original. Keep up the great work!

Thank you! I was iffy on the coat too. I didn't want to make it black black because then the lineart would have been gone. So I went with a dark green. I honestly dont know where the hell dark burnt red came from and I didn't like it either. I was just determined to post whatever I had finished. And yeah truthfully I half assed the lineart on the lower half. I was exhausted when I did the lineart last night.

What I do when drawing black clothes is I make it a dark grey, or a very dark shade of another colour, depending on the kind of feeling I want my drawing to have. When drawing black hair, keep in mind that natural black hair is actually dark brown.

Oh I know that with the hair part. I'm still just learning shading. I suck at it obviously, so yeah.

Just know there's gonna be a lot of fluff cause I gotta type in one hundred words as a minimum apparently, and god that is annoying, now on to the critique. I've never actually heard of the idea of creating one's own style through the means of just drawing another person's work, but, this does look quite creative. Maka actually has a realistic nose which has always been something I noticed in Soul Eater. I also like the more subtle shading detail, it makes the overall picture stand out a lot more. I do gotta ask about the bits of red near Maka's chest, was that intentional? Overall though great work!

I agree with the 100 word limit. The red on her coat is actually intentional because I've seen a lot of other artists use completely different colors as shading and it work. Im still learning shading but I was thinking if I used a dark green for the coat, I wondered how the dark red as a shading would look. I don't think it gave the effect I was looking for but it's a learning experience~
